MMR reaction after 10 days

My DS13 months had his MMR 10 days ago, initially he seemed fine however after 5 days started to develop a very high fever (39 plus) and became lethargic, off food etc. Now 5 days later he still has a v high temp (39.8 this morning) and since yesterday he’s covered in a measles rash. Is this normal? I did take him to the doctor yesterday but she said she hadn’t heard of an MMR reaction and that it was just a virus? He still had a high fever whenever the Calpol or Nurofen wears off.

GP is talking mince! It's well known that MMR can have side effects at different intervals after vaccination:

Common side effects are usually mild and only last 2 to 3 days, they include:

  • a raised, blotchy rash (similar to a measles rash), feeling unwell and a high temperature around 7 to 11 days after the vaccination
  • swollen glands around the cheeks, neck and jaw and aching in your joints (similar to a mild form of mumps) around 2 to 3 weeks after the vaccination

My friend's dd had a reaction to m, m AND r, at different points after the vaccination...

My DS hadcan MMR jab at the age of 16. Exactly 10 days later he fainted at school. GP was adamant there was no link between the 2 even though I remember being told when his sister had hers as a toddler that she might be mildly unwell 10 days after the jab!

You're definitely within the standard timeframe for some of the MMR side effects. They do take just over a week to come out.

Are you sure he's not caught another virus causing the temp? I presume they checked him all over? Ears throat etc?
the rash does sound like it's from the vaccine.

How can a GP not know this? The information was in the patient information leaflet I was given when my daughter had the vaccination.

I hadn’t realised before then about the times for reactions. And we had a holiday booked smack bang in middle of the window for side effects. We ended up with an awful flight to our destination with a very cranky baby, and when we arrived my baby projectile vomited over me, herself, her clean bedding and the floor. I could have cried! If I had known beforehand I definitely would have timed it differently!

Yes checked him all over! GP seemed to think it’s a viral rash which he does occasionally get on him tummy when he’s not well, but current rash is all over him head to toe, and it’s raised like a measles rash.

@eurochick interesting you say your DC had an upset tummy as DS is having some loose nappies too and the gp said that definitely wasn’t caused by the vaccine.

Im not sure if either the gps are clueless on the side effects or if they are downplaying them to encourage more people to have their vaccine. It won’t put me off getting the second dose but I’m just quite worried about DS!
