Erythema Multiforme?

Hi all,

3yo DD has been diagnosed with this today, after coming up in a slight rash yesterday morning and then completely losing the ability to weight bare/complaining of pain on her feet and hands. We spent 4.5 hours in A&E last night and were told it could be a form of inflammatory arthritis, however this morning I took her back in as her rash had got a lot worse and were were told it was likely Erythema Multiforme. Told to give painkillers/antihistimines when required. This afternoon the rash has flared up a lot more around her face and eyes (although doesn’t seem to be affecting her actual eyes iyswim) and she’s also flared up on her stomach/back more.

I will be calling the doctor back shortly but just wondered if anyone else had any experience of this?

If it's thought to be EM, this is a good page from NHS.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/erythema-multiforme/

With any rash if it's evolving in an unexpected or worrying way (especially if eyes or lips newly involved), seems reasonable to get it looked at again via GP.

I had EM about 10 years ago. It used to flare up out of nowhere, mainly on my trunk. Mine was more of a ‘target’ shaped rash though- so red around the outside and whiter in the middle. I didn’t have any pain though- it was possibly itchy,

I would get in touch with your GP again.

I hope she’s on the mend soon!

Thanks all. I called the Dr back (we’ve been given open access to the children’s ward for the week) who said it’s normal for it to fluctuate a bit, they would worry more if it’s in her eyes/mouth.

@Nevermeever it’s hard to see in the pics but where it’s developing a bit more, it does have more of a ‘target’ look. How long did you have it for if you don’t mind me asking?

@bear1991 I had it on and off for about 4 months. I never did get to the bottom of it. Had blood tests, etc but I do wonder if stress was involved as it was around the time of my divorce.

i think anti histamines worked well when it was at its worse.

I’ve just looked at the photos again and it reminds me of the the rash my toddler had on her feet with covid.

@Nevermeever gosh you poor thing! Sorry to hear you were having such a tough time :(

They did a blood test which came back slightly raised for infection but the Dr said this was to be expected as she’s clearly fighting a virus. Urine test came back negative, just waiting on the throat swab.

Yes, a few links to covid came up when I googled. I guess she could have had that without me knowing!

Luckily we have Piriton to hand as she has a few food allergies which I think it’s helping with the itching 🤞🏼
