What age did your baby start to sleep through the night?

Hi,

my boy is nearly 8 months old now and for a while now he doesn’t sleep very well. He usually has around a total of 2-3 hours nap time a day which I’ve been advised is normal and then I will take him up to bed around 7:30 he then has a bath before bed and usually falls asleep around 8:30/9 o’clock. He falls asleep fine but then wakes every couple of hours I thought he would have outgrew this by now but maybe I’m just being naive.

Is there anything you found helped your baby sleep better? I have also spoken to my health visitor about this and she said maybe he might just be a baby who doesn’t need a lot of sleep. The lack of sleep is really getting to me at the minute, any advice is appreciated 😊

Years. One was about 2-3. The other one called out every night till he was 4-5.

Except for illness or teething. Of course they learned new skills, it just never impacted their sleep at night and they never needed bottles in the night after sleeping through, if they wanted more milk then it happened during the day.

I hope you know that’s very unusual, and as it’s all 3 I’d assume something genetic rather than the result of a routine

Ds is 5 years. He still doesn’t.

I think the first time he started sleeping mostly and only waking 1-2 times was about 2.5 years. At 8 months I think he still woke every hour…

He now mostly sleeps, but falls asleep around 9pm, and almost without fail wakes between 12-3am and joins us in our bed still and then sleeps until 6am. If we return him to him he wakes hourly until morning

@SouthLondonMum22 I have to agree with @BuffaloCauliflower. That’s just not physiologically normal. An 8 week old has a gastric emptying time of 2-3hrs (if formula fed) so they would have been hungry. I don’t think training them to accept unmet needs is anything to be proud of.

Yogaandcrochet · 19/05/2025 14:07

Two and a half years.

Unbelievably, 6 weeks.

He was three months old when he started sleeping through the night. Prior to that he would wake once or twice for milk, feed then go straight back to sleep. He was an absolute dream.

Having a routine means exactly the opposite of not meeting their needs. They still woke up in the night if they needed me such as teething or illness so if they were hungry then they would've woken up too but they didn't.

I know plenty of formula fed babies who slept through from a young age. Some with a routine and some without.

Mine was a terrible sleeper until about 18 months, he has had the off month of a regression but it’s more getting him to sleep and then 1 wake up in the night.
My best friends little one slept through from 6 weeks but once she turned 2 sleep went out the window - you just can’t call it sadly

Sprogonthetyne · 19/05/2025 14:53

My oddest is 8 years and I'm still waiting. In fairness he turned up in my bed around 2am and I barely wake up, so don't really mind. My younger one has since about 2.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/05/2025 15:53

DS(DC1) did 11pm to 6am at 9 weeks
DD(DC2) didn't sleep for more than 3 hours in a stretch until she was 3.5, and you could only really say that she slept through once she started school.

jolota · 19/05/2025 15:59

Around 3 years old but not reliably yet still.

WhatMe123 · 19/05/2025 16:08

Dd1 was about 1 and dd2 was about 2 and a half

minnienono · 19/05/2025 16:09

Dd1 was 2.5 years, dd2 was 6 years. Sorry

Mummaandme · 12/06/2025 15:17

Mine only slept through when I got a sleep consultant in. I think we’d still be struggling if we hadn’t got the help. There were so many factors I hadn’t thought of that needed tweaking and then my baby was sleeping through in 3 days. Wish I had got help sooner!

DS 7 months. Dd 6 months.
