Hi all,

Does this look like the start of Impetigo? They have been in close contact with someone who has come down with it. Only one lesion like this at mo, on buttock! A few small rashy spots across buttocks. Feels fine in themselves…

This is a close up image, mark is around 15mm ish

Thanks

I’m not a medical expert, but I have had impetigo a few times now, and I agree that this looks exactly like it. Is it weeping?

Not really, looks like it may though!

Do you start anti-biotic tablets/cream asap?

Last time I had it, it was a weekend, and I thought it would just be easier to buy the cream from a pharmacist online (think I used Superdrug). I had to send a photo of the patch, with a request for the medication (Fucidin antibiotic cream). The request was approved, and I was able to collect it from the pharmacy a few hours later.

As you say, it could potentially start to weep as it progresses. It certainly looks like it has that tell tale yellow crust starting to form.

I last had it after I decided it was a good idea to try and remove a whitehead in the corner of my nostril. I couldn’t resist it, and I kept trying to ‘get’ it (to no avail). The following day, the yellow crust started to form, then the weeping. It also meant I had to isolate all weekend (the weather was gorgeous), but I only had myself to blame for that!

I had something like this, it started as a small blister on the corner of my lips and then it spread all over my chin and cheek. I’d get blisters that broke and went crusty with yellow scabs at a rate of knots - from blister to nasty scab in 20 minutes flat. The scabs itched terribly (I wore socks on my hands at night to try to prevent scratching) and if the scab was knocked or disturbed at all it spread even more. It wasn’t impetigo. Skin swabs showed it to be a staphylococcus infection and the antibiotics for that eventually knocked it on the head. It left some scarring which eventually did fade. So I’d go to the doctor with that, but good luck with getting an appointment!
