Sending to preschool with temp?

Do you send your child in, if they are fine in themselves but have a temp?

DC has had a cough over weekend with temp, fine and playing in day but awful at night. DC was better yesterday, went for their swim lesson and slept better last night.

Woke up this morning and was fine, but still got a cough. Temp was back down to normal, so sent in.

I just collected and preschool said they have been fine but has had a nasty cough this afternoon. I just did temp and it’s 38.3°! So, back up again and cough is not great.

I feel bad for sending in but all seemed okay this morning. Should I send in tomorrow if feeling okay or no?

Reflect the scenario back at yourself. Would you be happy if another parent sent a sick child in with something that could be passed to your kid?

Well, no. Although I never think like that when dc get poorly. I do feel bad for sending dc in today but they said all has been fine bar the cough this afternoon. There was no coughing this morning and they were happy to go in. Maybe day off tomorrow then! I’ve caught it now too, so sick day all round.

No, definitely not with a temp

If they’ve got a temperature they’re ill and should be at home. You’ll know yourself when you have a bug you can go from feeling a bit under the weather, to absolute crap in ten minutes. That’s aside from them also potentially infecting everyone at nursery.

In your case no I wouldn't send them in as its cough and temp.

In DS1 case if only symptom is a slight temp then yes we did used to send him to nursery because he has a overactive immune response to exposure to a sneeze. It's just his body dealing with it. You wouldn't know to look at him and he can happily be running around at 38.5 degrees. But we did discuss it with the nursery and had a paediatrics letter.

Never think like what? About spreading it?

in answer to your OP, no I wouldn’t send a child to nursery or swimming with a temperature.

nursery would have sent home or turned away here today. Sorry you have caught it but I would be more worried about the staff and other kids.

just don’t get it

In Ireland the general rule in preschool/creche is exclusion for 48 hours since last occurance of fever (38+)/or calpol or ibuprofen given to treat a fever

Superscientist · 14/05/2025 10:40

I would have sent them in the morning that the temperature was normal as I would have assumed they were coming out of the bug but having had their temperature go up at nursery I'd keep them off until their temperature was normal throughout the day not just the morning

No, not with a temp
