Baby allergy? Drs shocking recommendation

Just shocked.

Since birth no formulas have been kind to my DD (mostly terrible poops diarrhoea, blood, mucus or constipation)

She's so far been on-

Cow and gate
SMA Althera
Aptamil Lactose Free
Nurtimagen 2 LGG
currently on Aptamil Pepti 2

But still symptoms are awful. ATM she is congested, watery eyes and mucus poop again.

I called dr to say this isn't working either. He knows she's 6 months and he mentioned changing the formula to Alpro unsweetened oat milk!!!!! I was like sorry what? I don't mean I need a milk for weaning I need a formula for her feeds! He said yes try that. I'm absolutely shocked that a dr has recommended that as a substitute to infant formula!!!

I challenged this and he said "I have run out of options, so continue with the Aptamil Pepti 2 until you hear from dietician" so I asked him to expedite the referral!

I'm shocked! Upset! And having to deal with a poorly baby! Sorry had to vent!!!!

Do you know what it is she is allergic to? How long since you stopped breastfeeding? Sometimes it’s possible to get your milk to come back in if it hasn’t been long since you stopped.

whoops2024 · 12/05/2025 14:54

@MolkosTeenageAngst nope 😭
Can't figure it out

u3ername · 12/05/2025 14:55

whoops2024 · 12/05/2025 14:56

I hope it helps your little one. Some drs are ridiculous

Oat milk is just oaty water. I make it at home sometimes to save on the price. Unless he meant the oat growing up milk but that's only recommended for age 1+ as a drink, not as a main source of nutrition for a 6m old! I'd try Wysoy and Nanny Care before that, personally!

MikeRafone · 12/05/2025 14:58

At 6 months what is the science of keeping baby on formula?

when mine were 6 months they went to cows milk, what is the scientific research that has stopped this in the last 20 years?

whoops2024 · 12/05/2025 15:01

@PrincessAnne4Eva another dr mistake when she was 4months wysoy was recommended so I went bonkers trying to find it but the dr didn't even know it had been discontinued 🫠

@MikeRafone just gave it a Google -

the shift away from giving babies regular (cow's) milk at 6 months comes from a better understanding of infant nutrition and development.
1. Nutritional Gaps in Cow’s Milk
• Low in iron: Cow’s milk has very little iron, and giving it too early can increase the risk of iron-deficiency anemia, especially since babies are depleting their birth iron stores around 6 months.
• Low in essential fatty acids and vitamins: These are critical for brain development.
• High in protein and minerals: It can strain immature kidneys and even irritate the gut lining.
2. Risk of Allergies or Digestive Issues
• Cow’s milk protein can be harder for infants under 12 months to digest and may trigger issues like intestinal bleeding or allergic reactions in some cases.

Ask for Neocate or Alfamino ...

Oh has it? Damn! I didn't know that either (my youngest is 3 now). Sorry, that's out the window then.

@TheGreenHam I don't need to go into the personal reason I did not choose to BF my child. Thank you. And goodbye.

Do you not have any clue how breastfeeding works? If OP hasn’t been breastfeeding since the birth then she’s not suddenly going to be able to produce milk at 6 months postpartum! Yes, there are ways to try to induce lactation later or even for adoptive mums but it’s highly unlikely to work well enough to replace all formula feeds, even if OP was interested in that route.

TryingToStayAwake88 · 12/05/2025 15:19

You might find joining the cmpa group on Facebook useful as others will be in the same boat and I'm sure there is a formula version.

AlwaysFreezing · 12/05/2025 15:20

Woah there @TheGreenHam what are you doing? This isn't a bf vs ff debate! This a mum asking for some help with formula for a baby with allergies.

Mumsnet is meant to be a place to make parents lives easier. Your posts are the opposite of that.

Do you have anything constructive to post that might help the op out?
