Ever had a child’s tooth removed? Reassurance please (if possible)

Hello,
My 14 year old has to have two adult teeth removed as part of his orthodontic work, as his mouth is overcrowded.

He has never had a bad experience at the dentist, he’s never previously needed any work doing. I am really anxious that it’s going to be completely awful and distressing for him.

Has anyone been through this and can give me some reassurance or realistic information about what to expect?

I’d be really grateful and thanks in advance,
Flissty

I’m so glad you posted this OP as my DD needs teeth removing soon. Hope both of our DCs get on ok.

at 14 and with no special needs, you really have nothing to worry about.

dd had has had extensive dental work over the years and some of it has been absolutely traumatic for both her and for me. She was too young to cooperate and we could not always go to the hospital for sedation. As she got older, it got very easy, despite being just as involved.

on the side issue, I’m in my 50s. I had teeth pulled ahead of braces in my teens. I wore a retainer for about a year after the braces came off. Nothing after that. Absolutely no shifting.

My 14 year old had 2 removed prior to orthodontist work. Like most kids nowadays, his experience at the dentists involved only checkups, so he’d never had any procedures or injections.

He didn’t particularly enjoy the injections, but the teeth came out really quickly and he barely bled at all.

I had loads out for dental problems but never got a brace which had I known then would have resolved later dental problems!
Alignment of teeth isn't just a cosmetic thing. It really affects you if you don't bite correctly and can cause grinding, jaw pain, nerve pain and so on. Definitely worth the pain.
Probably good to prepare him for the unpleasantness though. Teach him some deep breathing or meditation techniques to help through the worst (injection and the horrible noise)

I had this done at 17 for the same reason. I was ok with it being done with just local anaesthetic but they failed to me took one keep my teeth had a bundle of nerves under it and cracked the tooth whilst getting it out. They kept pulling and pulling, I could feel everything by this point. I started having a panic attack, pulse 160 couldn’t breathe etc they had to abandon and send me to the hospital for sedation….even now I will not have a tooth pulled without sedation. Scarred me for life!

@Summergarden it was fine! He had both done in one appointment because it was so fine. The worst bit is he asked to take them home and now they are in an envelope in his room 🤢

I'm old. I had 2 out with local, 4 out (under general when I had my tonsils out) at 6 and then 8 out under gas and air when I was 9.

All were OK. The 8 was quite a big deal. It got me a couple of days off school, chocolate and both the beanie and the dandy.
I remember the moulds for my braces were much more uncomfortable than the extractions.

I've since had all of my wisdom teeth out under local one at a time - the last 2 in my lunch break. Tooth extractions really aren't such a big deal.

Your son will be fine if he expects there to be nothing to worry about.

@Flissty

Of course he brought them home - when is the tooth fairy visiting ?
