Non blanching rash

Already been seen by a&e 3 days ago

my 5 month old baby on Sunday had a non blancing rash on his feet so we phoned 111 and went to a&e, they done blood tests which come back normal but this evening I’ve noticed the rash has spread up his legs, he’s completely fine in himself, drinking milk, wet nappy’s, no temperature, not sure what to do? Has anyone got any advice?

I'd go to GP if he's fine in himself. A&E again if he seems unwell. Is he sensitive to light or does he seem to have neck pain when moving his head?

I’d get an out of hours GP appointment for him to be reassessed. If the rash started 3 days ago and he’s entirely well then you can be confident it’s not meningococcal septicaemia (as the rash is typically a late sign, by which time the child is seriously ill), but there are other potential diagnoses that you don’t want to miss. He might warrant a blood test.

@Balloonhearts no not sensitive to light, neck is fine xx
@pbdr he’s had a blood test and they said no infection, going to phone the gp this morning see what they say xx

Did they check his platelets in the blood test? Low platelets (which can happen as a result of a viral infection) can cause a non blanching rash. They do usually correct themselves over time. The condition is called ITP. I mention it because it's not painful and doesn't make kids feel ill (except tired).

Mamaxo · 08/05/2025 08:27

@BummingHerdthat’s what they checked I’m not sure if they did c

Ah yes, his platelets are fine (425, range is 150 to 450).
So it's not that :)

Ds used to get non-fading rashes frequently as a baby to toddler. Never found any reason despite the hours spent in A&E with blood tests.

He was never ill with them.

Safety netting advice suggests to return if rash starts spreading

If he's well in himself it probably doesn't warrant return to A&E, but would make a GP appointment for tomorrow

Mamaxo · 08/05/2025 20:25

Seem the gp who have said everything you guys have basically, so just got to keep a eye on him and if it spreads more he’ll be referred to the hospital and if he has a temp/unwell straight to a&e which I would anyway xx
