Appendicitis recovery

DS aged 8 had appendix out a couple of days ago via keyhole surgery. It had perforated and peritonitis was mentioned in his notes. However, it seems to have been caught before it got really nasty - I think as far as perforated appendices go it wasn’t terrible. He’s home and doing really well in the circumstances. I asked in hospital about when he could return to school and the consultant seemed to think he could do so this week?? I was thinking more like two weeks off school given his age and that he’s recovering from quite a major ordeal. It would be useful to know how long others have needed in similar circumstances.

My daughter had hers out in February aged 15y. If she hadn't been in Y11 she would have had 2 full weeks off. She went back day 13, if day 1 was day of op. Similar scenario to yours, early perforation but not bad. Surgeon sounds optimistic. She couldn't get herself out of bed before about day 4.

My 12yo ds had his appendix out last October. He was off school for a week and off sports for more like 6 weeks.

Ds (12 at the time) had his out in the middle of lockdown when they couldn't do keyhole. It was a difficult surgery and took about 4.5 hours.
He was totally out of it for about 3 days, by the end of a week would have been okay to go back to school if it had been on (although he'd have probably milked it to stay off 🤣)
After 2 weeks he was complaining because I said he wasn't allowed to go and kick a football/bounce on a trampoline etc.
Mind you, I'll also add that he was nearly sent home from the hospital when he said his pain was 2/10 and he broke his wrist at the beginning of a football match and played the remainder (much to the PE staff's, when they learnt the next day, horror) so he isn't necessarily the best judge.

However pain for being asked to revise/do homework is about 20/10.

Thanks for all replies. It’s helpful to know how long I am likely to have him off school in negotiating some time off work.
