Hip extensor strain

DD4.5 has pain in her right hip/groin area. DH thinks it's a hip extensor strain, which seems to fit as it hurts when she lifts her leg. She first told me about it a few days ago but it seemed to go away, then came back today and for a while she was finding it too painful to walk (I had to carry her back home from the bus stop). We iced it, and she was running around the house and garden later in the day.

My question is what we should do about it in the next few days and when we should contact a doctor... GP isn't back until Tuesday so my plan was to wait till then and see how she is, but am I being to lax? Also, tomorrow we're due to go to two birthday parties (one morning, one afternoon) with a midday swimming lesson in between! It would be a big day in any case, but given the hip issue should we cancel one or two of the commitments?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Has she been under the weather at all recently - children can get an irritable hip after a viral infection. I wouldn't do any of tomorrow's activities if she's got pain it's only going to make it worse. Have you been giving her regular pain relief? I'd have a low threshold for taking her to A&E as there are things that can go wrong with children's hips and I'd want a professional to rule out any of those.

Thanks for the reply @2cats1dog2babies ! No viral infections that were aware of. The pain was worse today so we cancelled the activities and saw the GP (miraculously got an appointment within 1hr of calling 111!!!). Dr thinks probably tendonitis but we have an x ray on Tues as a precaution.

@Snoodley hope the xray was fine, always better to air on the side of caution with children and their hips!

X ray was fine - thanks!

They seem to think that it's "irritable hip" caused by a minor injury or a viral infection 🤷‍♀️ It should go away on its own apparently. She's still getting the occasional twinge after doing too many cartwheels, but it's much better.
