Toddler urine dark? Dehydrated?

My 2 (nearly 3) year old has started going to the potty more frequently the past 4 days. He had been a little unwell on Thursday and the doctor said to watch for him getting dehydrated.

Each time he’s gone on the potty his wee has come out this colour, Monday his first wee was the darkest, the picture I’ve uploaded is from this morning. Yesterday when getting him up and ready for nursery he had a totally dry nappy and had not weed at all in the night, when he got to nursery he’d weed in his nappy pretty much straight away at about 9am, but when I went to pick him up at 6pm they said that was the only wee he’d done, despite spending all day giving him water.

He got home and did 3 wees between 6 and 9.30, all still a fairly dark yellow. I phoned 111 to get some advice. He is very fussy with eating and drinking but is barely having anything food wise, we’ve been actively doing everything possible to get drink down him.

111 said that she could understand my concern but he should be fine as he’d done 3 wees in the evening by the time I’d spoke to her, but she also said she was not concerned at all with the colour of his wee.

It’s just still playing on my mind because his wee has been so much clearer than this when he’s used his potty previous. And he’s been given so much water the last few days but it doesn’t seem to be getting any lighter?

I just am not sure where to go next, I suffer with anxiety and have so many people constantly saying in life how I’m being extreme or to stop worrying and it’ll be fine, but then I also have my mum telling me in this case that I should take him to GP to have it tested in case of infection?

Thank you for reading, I’m currently 24 weeks pregnant myself and one stressed exhausted mamma over here 😩 I don’t want to leave it if it could be an infection or issue with his kidneys, but also don’t want to look like I’m not listening what’s been said?

Id make a GP appointment and try to do a clean catch of urine so you can take a sample with you for them to dip and/or send off to the lab.
ice lollies and jelly are a good way to get more fluids in. I go by the if you’re worried seek medical advice mantra. I’m a retired nurse and would happily see a toddler like yours to check them over.

Thank you for this! I phoned the GP, he said to keep an eye on him and encourage as much liquids as I can! Wet nappies seem to have increased thankfully but he’s not been back on his potty so yet to see the colour, fingers crossed back to normal 🙏🏻 xxx

From the photo it looks like he may be a little low on fluids . It's been very hot so he may be losing more fluid through his skin even if not obviously sweating . If the urine is cloudy or smelly or he complains of pain when urinating the see the GP / walk in centre . If increasing fluids doesn't help or he develops other symptoms also get him seen .Try jelly, ice lollies or anything he will take to increase fluids .
