Eye test on my daughter

Hi my daughter is 7 and I’ve took her for a routine eye test today and they took pics of her eyes, said her eyesight is fine and healthy. But in the pics they said the back of her eye was showing blurred and a circle wasn’t connected, can’t remember the part of the eye she said but it’s the back of the eye. She’s reffered us to the hosp as an emergencey she said I should hear in 2 weeks and ig not to call them. Does anyone know what this means or been threw similar??? My daughter does have occasionally headaches.

Funnily enough I’ve been in hospital with my DD today for something very similar.

In my DD’s case it was the edge of the optic nerve showing up blurry, might that be the same for you? This first showed up at the optician about 6 months ago (DD was also getting headaches) and they referred us to hospital to check for signs of infection/inflammation etc. Then we had a 6 months follow up today to check it hadn’t changed.

Long story short it isn’t inflammation and she hasn’t changed - she is just made that way and they are not worried at all.

Hope it’s the same for you.

Aw that’s brilliant for u and your DD. they did say to me she could of been born with it. I’m a very anxious mum and person so I struggle with stuff like this and waiting 😭 I’m not sure what she said it was as I was brain fogged with anxiety but it’s something at the back of the eye and the circle isn’t connected properly either so what ever that is they didn’t mention inflammation just blurry and it could be causing pressure on the brain to cause headaches.

Yes that does sound similar then, circle could be how the optic nerve looks on the photo of the back of the eye. The chances are it’s just how she was born but they have to check it out as if it’s an infection or something it would need treatment. Hope you get an appointment soon and it sets your mind at rest.

Bugger that, find your nearest hospital with a 24 hour separate eye A&E. Where abouts are you in the UK? I can recommend a few.

Bristol used to have a good rep, but I don't think it's 24 hours a day any more. I'm sorry I don't know anything in terms of Wales though.

I occasionally refer a child into the hospital eye service as a precaution if I see blurred optic discs margins ( the circles you refer to) . These circles are where the optic nerves connect the eye to the brain . The vast majority of blurred margins are caused by something called optic disc drusen and mostly nothing to be concerned about but we like to rule out other causes if a child is experiencing other symptoms like headaches, nausea, vomiting, tinnitus . It’s more of a concern if the patient is female, teenage years upward and higher BMI as blurred discs can be more indicative of raised pressure on the optic nerves.
Please try not to worry , it’s the optometrist taking a belt and braces approach asking for clarification from the hospital.
Any other eyecare professionals reading this , I have simplified the explanation above .

Hi all my 14 year old daughter has been referred to the hospital after a routine eye test for further tests at they say her optic nerve was fuzzy when checked. Has anyone had any experience with this and their teens please? Thank you im a worrier 😞

I'm an optometrist.
A blurry optic nerve is usually due to something called optic disc drusen - which are benign lumps and don't usually cause issues. But due to a previous case, we have to refer anyone with any kind of disc "fuzziness"
It's very unlikely to be anything serious if she isn't having any other symptoms.
