Child's hearing loss.

Looking for anyone with knowledge of what I could be looking at. So basically we have been noticing little things about my daughter's hearing. She try's so hard to hear what you're saying and pushes her head up against you. (She's 3 and a half). Her speech is perfect and she hits all her milestones. Every-time you talk to her she constantly says "what". I find myself having to talk really loud to her all day. I brought her to the GP today as I couldn't get through to the PHN, she said her left ear has a lot of wax but her right ear looks like an ear that's had a lot of infections and has perforations. She has never had an infection or complained of ear pain so I'm so confused of how that's how it looks. Thankfully she's a healthy child and is rarely sick. She's been referred to a consultant and they have been trying to contact the PHN to book a hearing test. Anyone had anything similar or advice?

Must be very worrying for you OP.
Sorry, no advice but hopefully someone will be along soon.

My daughter had frequent ear infections without symptoms. We knew because, due to enlarged adenoids, snoring issues and hearing loss, she was followed by an ent clinic, so she would go for a checkup and they would say she'd have an infection.
She also suffered from glue ear which accounted for the hearing loss. Like you we never had concerns about speaking but sometimes she would become extremely hard of hearing (normally during/after a cold) and we would have to shout for her to understand.
We discussed grommets but it never got to the point where it was bad enough, and now thankfully she seems to be growing out of it (she's 5).
It's difficult when they have hearing loss but it's great that you've been referred for all the tests so she'll get help if she needs it. Good luck to you both.

My daughter has hearing loss without having had any ear infections or obvious speech issues. It takes a while to get the initial tests so keep pushing. You can go privately too if you are concerned. Good idea to get on top of before they go to school. Our daughter’s didn’t get picked up until y1 (due to Covid) and didn’t get hearing aids until y2. They’ve been life changing for her (and us!). Good luck and hope you get some answers soon!

Thank you, I'm glad you got sorted. Such a stressful time, I can get through to anyone and unfortunately I was told I can't go privately (well in Ireland anyway). I have no idea how long the wait is or anything I'm so worried it could get worse in the time it takes to see a specialist!
