Advice - Tonsillectomy this week

my 4 year old is having her tonsils and adenoids removed this week & apart from stocking up on pain relief does anyone have any practical advise or tips on how to help her with recovery? I’ve stocked the fridge with foods she likes (not sure what she’ll feel up to eating) but hoping for some tips to keep her comfortable. Thanks in advance ☺️

chill factor slushy maker was a winner. It meant that he was keeping hydrated but benefitted from the coldness on his sore throat. I could also control the amount of juice in the cup too so it didn't sting too much. Good luck OP! Maybe something for a treat for yourself too as it's not easy taking care of poorly little ones xxx

Thanks for the great advice, we actually have one of those in the cupboard that rarely comes out but I’ll get it out and ready thank you! A treat for me sounds like a good idea too, I’m already wiped out from the Easter holidays eek! Thank you for the lovely message x

My DD had them out at this age and the recovery really wasn’t bad at all. I think these days they do the procedure slightly differently so a tiny stump of tonsil is left over and this hurts a lot less than the old version? Hopefully it will go smoothly for your DC too

Keep up with the pain relief (even through the night), when my daughter had hers taken out she had to have pain relief 24/7 for about 5 days. She found chewy sweets nice and easy to eat too and ice cold drinks/lollies. Good luck to you both!

I would second the pain relief 24/7 tip. The worst time for my dd was in the morning after being asleep all night. Even taking the calpol was a slow struggle. Really was the best thing we did though even if I was questioning myself at day 2/3.

Use calpol syringes to syringe water in if they won’t drink from a cup. We did regular calpol and nurofen, ice lollies before eating to numb the throat and then they eat their meals/snacks.
