What does this rash look like?

Hi, my 17 month old has broke out in a rash this afternoon starting on his back and trunk and has now spread to his face, arms and legs. He had a temperature over the weekend. Does it just look like a viral rash? Going to book a GP appointment in the morning.

Poor little chap. Is it itchy?

OneSparklyPoet · 21/04/2025 21:27

@RoseAndGeranium it didn’t seem to be bothering him at first then when I was trying to get him to sleep he was itching and not settling. Took 2 hours to get him to sleep!

It looks like a post viral rash to me. I doubt there's anything the gp can do.

@RosesAndHellebores thanks I’m a FTM and he doesn’t usually get rashes so don’t know what they all look like. I’ll see how he is the morning.

That’s the worst. Give him some antihistamines in the morning if he’s still bothered, maybe? I think Piriton is available for little ones. Could just be a reaction to the virus. Kids’ immune systems are funny. On the slight chance it’s chicken pox (which comes up as a rash before the blisters develop, though that doesn’t look like a typical case so far as I know) don’t give ibuprofen as it can cause problems. Paracetamol is fine if the fever persists.

Thank you! I will try piriton if needed. I know I feel so bad for him. Ever since he started nursery he has caught everything under the sun.

They always do, poor things. I had to keep reminding myself that it’s really important for their immune systems and that exposure to a range of pathogens reduces the risk of more serious inflammatory and immune conditions further down the line. So hard to see them suffer though.
