Child (4) has been appropriately treated and is on the mend. But I just wondered what the hive mind of Mumsnet thought about this.

Over the course of the last week DC has had headache - severe waking up a night, joint pain (knees and wrists), tummy pain, chest pain, fevers (highest 39.9), chills, runny nose (developed day 3) and just generally unwell!

Bloods came back (that they shared with me)
High CRP
High Neutrophils
High WCC
Low Lymphocytes.

Didn't respond to oral antibiotics, temp went back to normal on day 6 after 24 hours of IV antibiotics.

We have seen many different Drs over the past week, who all offered a different diagnosis;
First Dr: tonsillitis
Second Dr: Viral
Third Dr: lower respiratory infection.

A bit of history; DC is also being looked into for frequent blood in urine.

I'm very pleased that they are getting better and as a result, the 'diagnosis' doesn't really matter - but just perplexed at being told different things, which made me reflect upon diagnostics in medicine being a professional opinion.

Any thoughts?

Slapped cheek/parvovirus causes joint pain in adults. They should have sent a throat swab and bloods which would rule in or out many infections, but the tests available are extremely variable depending on whether it's a big hospital, or a district general. And many tests will take days to come back, especially if they need to be sent to a bigger lab, so doctors have to diagnose based on symptoms and whatever other tests they can get back in a hurry, like cell counts and CRP.

Apparently they had slapped cheek (according to the pharmacist) at the beginning of April.
Don't know if you can get it twice in short succession?

Throat swabs were sent on our 4th visit (annoyed they didn't do them earlier!) but the rapid one came back with being insufferable. We are awaiting another 2, but I wouldn't be surprised if the other two also came back insufficient as it was hard and traumatic for the 4 yr old,

Slapped cheek is once in a lifetime, so either this is something different or the previous illness wasn't parvo - there are a lot of rash forming viruses that mimic each other, unfortunately. Sorry your son had a tough time with the throat swab, when baby had to be swabbed for COVID and RSV they were able to do nasal swabs, but if they need to rule out bacterial tonsillitis I guess there's no alternative :/

Sorry your son is having a rotten time. We are on our second bout of D&V since 4th April, the illness is relentless isn't it?!
