Two-year-old urinated twice in 24 hours

Hello, looking for someone help. I collected my two-year-old daughter from nursery on Thursday and staff told me she had been withholding wee and then crying when she finally went. I got an emergency appointment with GP who prescibed antibiotics. She had a temperature Thurs Eve and Fri but it came down to normal yesterday and she's much much better in herself, however she has urinated only twice in last 24 hours. Should I be concerned? My husband thinks I'm overreacting. It's Easter Sunday so only way we will get her seen by health professional is going to a hospital urgent treatment centre, which over a bank Holiday weekend will likely have long wait times. Obviously I will take her if we need to but don't want to put us all through that if I'm panicking unnecessarily.

Is she drinking enough?
I'd be tempted to give weak diluting juice to make sure she is hydrated enough. Some kids will drink far more juice than plain water.

Is she using a potty or nappies?
I'd be tempted to try the opposite.

Give her lots to drink and lots of wet food (jelly, ice lollies, melon). Maybe let her play in a warm bath.

is she in pain or withholding now?

Agree with diluted juice abd doing the opposite of whichever method you’re doing now.

Tou need to get as many fluids into her as you can so diluted juice, hot chocolate, homemade milkshakes, jelly, soup, watermelon or melon, broccoli, cauliflower, custard, cucumber. Just as many drinks and high water foods she’ll drink or eat.

Thank you everyone for the fast replies. I keep offering her drinks and fruits with lots of water in. She is drinking more this morning than she was yesterday, will keep offering and try making some ice lollies too.

I don't know if it still hurts her to wee. I didn't notice her get upset when she went in her nappy yesterday - the last time she went around 4pm yesterday. It's 8am the following day now.

We've been advised to avoid potty and delay potty training until she is older as she has on-going issues with withholding stools already. Which probably is connected to this UTI.

If she’s withholding poo as well it’s probably a good idea to stay in nappies for a while. Is she constipated at all? The ERIC website has some good information which should help you decide if she is.

Have you tried her with a dose of Calpol just in case weeing is bothering her?

Mothalina · 20/04/2025 08:33

She was on calpol for three days to get her temperature down, I was told (just by my mum) she shouldn't be on calpol for longer than three days? Her temperature is now normal so have stopped. Maybe should give her some more...
Thanks for the heads up about ERIC, am very familiar with them as have been dealing with this withholding issue for a year now. She is on a daily dose of laxatives and her stools have to be kept soft or she withholds.

Ok she just had a huge wee! She got upset, was definitely trying not to go. Can't tell if it still hurts her (she wasn't as upset as she was when she weed on Friday) could just now be fear/the memory of it hurting when she peed. Anyway feel relieved she's passing fluids and will keep encouraging her to drink more. Will see GP straight after bank holiday. Thank you everyone for the support. Hope you all have a happy Easter.

My oldest hated pooing in a wet nappy. From he was about 7 or 8 mths.

It wasn't the occasional 2nd nappy change it was frequent even nursery commented on the number of times you'd be doing 2 nappy changes in the space of 10 mins.
If i had time I'd plonk him on the potty between nappy changes especially in the morning, see if I could avoid having to do the second nappy change

While I'm not a huge fan of pull ups I'd try to offer the potty every couple of hours, just incase it's poo in the nappy she doesn't like.

Has she managed another yet @Mothalina?

Mothalina · 21/04/2025 17:22

@BunnyRuddington she did have another big pee yesterday afternoon but then was dry overnight and has only gone twice today - the last time mid-morning. Another big one. So i am still concerned and glad GP will be open again tomorrow.

Are you sure she's not ready to potty train?
It sounds like she's deliberately holding it to me. I'd at least try putting her on the potty every hour or two.
