Teen periods

Firstly, I will be contacting the GP tmrw for some advice but I wanted to know others experience of this and what/if there is anything I should be expecting the GP to do.

13yr old is on her second period. First was 7 days and heavy from the start. Tailed off at 5 days and stopped at 7. She then had a 26 day break before this one. She is now on day 13 of bleeding. It has been heavy and clotting at points. At day 7 it almost stopped but then day 9 onwards it’s been heavy again. Mixture of red and brown clots. Some parts of the day heavy and others light. No signs of stopping. Thankfully the pain hasn’t been too bad.

She is coping very well but starting to feel dizzy at points.

Thank you for any advice!

No advice but my teen is also on her second period and they've been long (7 days plus) and only 3 weeks apart. Everything I've read suggests this can be normal at the start but maybe get her to take iron supplements and contact GP for advice as its been going on so long?

You might get the brush off from the GP ("wait and see") and their first line is to offer the pill. One other thing you can ask for is mefenamic acid - it's a specific pain killer for period pain, one of the benefits is to reduce blood loss during your period. I discovered it in my early twenties and it was very helpful. Needs to be on prescription in the UK. You can't take ibuprofen at the same time.

I agree with PP, your daughter might need iron tablets, anaemia in young women is very very common and even mild anaemia is horrid.

could be helpful to plot her specific cyles on a period tracker then present it to the GP so it's more accurate. dd 14 uses the luna one as it's more age appropriate (none of those notifications about ovulating and fertility) x

This sounds really normal and it takes 3 years for periods to settle. If this continues in her late teens then see a doctor.
