Speech assessment advice!

Hi my little one is two and a bit and is going to have a speech assessment done privately. She struggles with most words/sounds and has had a TAS and Welcomm assessment. Any advice on what to expect from the assessment and what to ask? Thanks!

im a bit nervous about having this assessment as its so hard to get a speech therapist and want to make a good impression

Don't worry, there's no good impression to make. My daughter is a bit older but her assessment was just games and saying words and sounds.

The assessment will consist of fun games, and play. So it’s doesn’t feel like an assessment in the typical sense. The SALT will usually try and see what sounds your child can make and what errors/inconsistencies/omissions they have in their speech and language.

I think I asked about the process stages and what would happen next. Are you also under NHS?

Yes also under nhs but currently the waiting time is 46 weeks in my area. I just want to have to guidence and ways to help my daughter the right way. I have been very stressed about the whole speech issues she has. She has initial consonant deletion and omits middle and end sounds too.

Yes that sounds similar to my DS. My DS is now 5 and is under NHS, and we have private therapy EOW at the moment. You have to be pushy with NHS, and if she is in childcare you can get them to call and raise their concerns.

A private therapist will be really helpful in guiding you to help her at home, and breaking it all down for you. It definitely feels overwhelming to start with.
