Possible ear infection 2 year old

Is this a trip to A&E or should I wait to see GP tomorrow? My toddler has been non stop crying for about 2 hours and rubbing his ear, he won’t eat or have any calpol. He hates taking calpol anyway, but we have even tried putting the calpol in his milk which he also isn’t drinking. He has a very snotty nose and he sounds really chesty but his ear is really bothering him. We called 111, they just said calpol and keep an eye on it. He doesn’t have a high temp. Not too sure what to do.

Not a&e… wait for GP tomorrow.

A&E? wtf

Motherof1and2dogs · 03/04/2025 19:26

@Tipofthecattoes no need for that comment. That’s why I am asking to make sure I do the right thing and don’t waste others time if not needed but also don’t want to leave it if it can get serious. I am a first time mum to a 2 year old just looking for some advice.

Phone 111 if you’re worried and get an out of hours appointment. I just can’t believe you’d consider going to a&e and waiting 8 hours because a 2yr old has a sore ear!

Motherof1and2dogs · 03/04/2025 19:35

@Tipofthecattoes already called 111, they just said calpol but I feel like he needs antibiotics, I think it’s infection, which can’t infection become serious? That’s what worries me

They don't give antibiotics for ear infections usually. Most resolve in a few days.
My son always had much worse symptoms at night as it's sore when lying down.
Try to rotate calpol and nurofen. If he doesn't want it, put the syringe right deep into the cheek.
A warm compress on the ear can help too.

ShieldMaiden8 · 03/04/2025 20:29

If you have a hot water bottle try laying him on that, temperature appropriate of course. When my now 18 year old was little he was prone to ear infections and hot water bottles worked wonders for him.

It’s tricky but I think you just need to stick it out tonight and call gp in the morning. My youngest had repeated ear infections and they were horrible - he did grow out of it. From what you’ve said there’s no reason to panic. I’d be pretty firm on giving pain relief if possible.

Topjoe19 · 03/04/2025 20:38

Definitely warm hot water bottle against it will help. I find ibuprofen better for ear pain. Try to get it into him he'll feel much better for it. Bribe? Wrap him in a blanket & syringe it in? How do you get antibiotics into him if he won't take calpol?

nhsmummmy · 03/04/2025 20:44

swaddle him in a towel and put the calpol in.
my 2 year old has had one this week and antibiotics were prescribed….theyre just as hard to get down!!
hope he’s better soon

angelopal · 03/04/2025 20:47

Try Ibuprofen as it's better than Calpol for earache. DD had it one night and was crying in pain. Ibuprofen really helped and she didn't have an infection.

Are you a doctor? How have you surmised he needs antibiotics?

I mean, yes infections can be serious, but an ear infection is extremely extremely unlikely to go from nothing to serious in 2 hours. Just give him some ibuprofen and make a gp appointment

Pharmacy can see him and assess him as he's over 1yr, but if it's still early days he may not meet the criteria as they practice responsible prescribing of antibiotics and do not issue them if his own body can fight the infection, which is likely.

He needs painkillers and as others have said how are you going to get foul tasting antibiotics into him several times a day if you can't get calpol in, which tastes marginally better.

Yep painkiller in him tonight calpol and ibrophan (spelling?) And a not water bottle on the ear.

Is there anything draining from his ear? It's likely its not a serious infection. My ds is currently on his 3rd lot of antibiotics awaiting results from a swap from all the gunk coming from his ear.

If he still won't calm would a bath help distract him? Be very careful about getting water in the ears though.
