Persistant red swollen tonsils but no fever

My 3 year old has persistently red, swollen tonsils. No white spots, just very close together at the back of his mouth and causes a lot of mouth breathing and one hell of a lot of snoring. No fever and generally a very well child (touch wood).
Have been to the GP in October and they’ve said to go back in 9-12 months if it doesn’t clear - so 9 months will be July.
I ideally don’t want to put him through surgery unnecessarily but if it will help I am happy to oblige! Has anyone else’s child had similar? Did it resolve itself or did the tonsils have to come out?

If its causing him to mouth breathe then definitely thats not good for him. Mouth breathing affects so many things; disturbed sleep, concentration, tiredness, crooked teeth and narrow jaws. It also affects the facial profile. Best to see an ENT specialist as GP might not have all the info, they follow guidelines but the root cause might not only be enlarged tonsils, it could be tongue. I understand your concern regarding surgery but the overall well being is was more important. Im a dentist specialising in kids orthodontics and im speaking from experience. Best of luck with your little one :)
