Hip and leg pain in 9 year old

My daughter has had hip/leg pain on and off for the last week. She's also had a throat/ tonsillitis type virus which she is now almost recovered from but the hip pain is still continuing. I'm not sure what to do, as soon as she gets home from doing something like school or going out she has to lie down. Last week the hip pain went to her back and was so bad she was crying at night but that only happened once.

She doesn't play sports or anything strenuous. Do you think a&e would offer her an X ray? I don't want to sit there for 4 hours if they are just going to brush it off as growing pains.

Anyone had anything similar or can offer some advice?

Why on earth would you need A&E? Take her to the doctors.

ComplexSatsuma · 02/04/2025 20:12

Well I don't think I do need a&e which is what I was trying to get across, I took her to the GP last week and he was the one who mentioned a&e.

Is it both sides? I remember having awful growing pains in my legs and hips around that age. It was always worse at night, causing lots of tears. It flared up on and off for months.

ComplexSatsuma · 02/04/2025 20:19

@Justmuddlingalong yes both sides, I was thinking that as this does seem the age for growing pains but I don't remember having them myself and my Mum's not around anymore to ask! Thank you

It felt like a toothache in my bones and was unbearable at times.

When my dd was small, she complained of aching legs. It went on for a while. The GP asked if she had recently had a cold/virus which she had. He said that aches can sometimes be the after effects of the virus. It cleared up soon afterwards

It does sound like it could be irritable hip (transient synovitus). My son has had it 3 times following viruses. Each time we went to hospital (initially sent there by GP) it's not serious but they had to rule out other conditions.
I would call 111, perhaps you could get an appointment at an urgent care centre/similar

Sounds like irritable hip, DS has had it a few times. He had to rest and alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Well that’s pretty important info you didn’t include. Did the doctor say why you needed to go to a&e? Sounds odd. He can refer for an xray.

Juvenile arthritis? My friend had that when we were at school. Similar symptoms and crying with night pain. The weight of the duvet on her legs. Parents fashioned a cardboard box ‘tunnel’ for her legs at the bottom of the bed.

My ex had this as a child and it turned out to be leukaemia. Get it checked out asap.

Thank you, I am going to get her seen this week and hopefully the GP can run some tests
