Poorly baby

Long story, 5 month old baby boy, unwell on Monday, very wheezy, not breathing well. Took him to GP who prescribed an inhaler, and said if it doesn’t improve then I’ll give you some steroids. I called back on the Tuesday, and said still no improvement. She prescribed prednisolone, I was reluctant to give them to him, so I just waited. In that night his oxygen was dropping to 89/90/91, took him straight to a&e whose diagnosis was cows milk protein allergy? And wasn’t concerned about o2 levels whilst asleep. So I went home with him.
Wednesday.
still not happy with how baby is, sucking in at the ribs. Only taking 60% feeds. Went to see GP again. Said baby is unwell but not so unwell needs to go hospital. And make sure I give him inhaler and steroids. Which I done when I got home. Wednesday night, just getting ready for sleep, I look down at baby he’s very pale, not rousable, clammy and sweaty, called 999 immediately, they took him to hospital, where they diagnosed him with dehydration and gave him fluids. They allowed me to stay in for another night, so we was discharged Friday. I was reluctant to leave, as baby is still pale, cold and clammy when sleeping. But they just wasn’t interested. I just feel like I’m going mad with worry and just needed to vent. He had around 800 mls of fluid yesterday but when I woke him up in the night his lips was so dry. He has had no fever this whole time just low temps. Has anyone had similar?

Why didn’t you give him the steroids?

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 29/03/2025 14:23

The doctor prescribed you medicine and YOU refused to give them to the child and the child ended up in A&E?

RJmumof1 · 29/03/2025 17:36

I’m glad I didn’t give them to him because my older child had a reaction to them, and once I got to a&e the doctor there told me that babies that young should not be given and inhaler and steroids! So conflicting information between a few professionals!

To be fair under most circumstances babies this age shouldn't be given steroids for what sounds like bronchiolitis (with or without wheeze features).

Bronchiolitis would have been my first guess too. Have they tested for RSV or any other viruses?

RJmumof1 · 29/03/2025 23:36

Yes I believe they have tested for that. He no longer has the respiratory symptoms, just keeps becoming really cold to touch, low temps and now he isn’t weeing. So I am back up the hospital.

The A&E doctor is misinformed; infants can take prednisolone from one month old. You should have given the medication your GP prescribed to your baby.

Can, yes. Should...? Obviously every case turns on the facts but it's an unusual decision by the GP, let's say.

But it generally doesn't work for bronchiolitis, which at that stage was the most likely diagnosis. I'm not going to blame the OP for not giving a medication that I would have advised the GP not to prescribe.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/03/2025 00:55

You should have given the steroids.

RJmumof1 · 30/03/2025 09:49

Thank you! I asked for advice on my baby having theses cold clammy sweats, and low temperatures. But seem like I’m being penalised for not giving him steroids when as soon as you mention steroids to the paeds doctors they say shouldn’t be given to infants.
