Lively child and major surgery

Ds4 is 11. Been on the waiting list for this operation for 3 years 4 months and now it's finally happening next week. He's had 3 big operations before and 20 little ones.

He is really active. Last time he had an operation he had midazolam and had a bad reaction to it. The nurse at his pre operation appointment said there is another pre med we can try (can't remember what it was called) but I'm worried he will react to that as well.

It's just going to be me and ds at the hospital as hospital is 90 minutes away and dh has to look after the other dc who are not allowed to visit. Last time ds just wanted to be running up and down the ward, both before and after his operation. All the other dc apart from the babies were happy to sit and draw or play on tablets etc but ds just wanted to be running around, which I stopped him doing but it was really hard. After his operation he kept trying to get out of bed before the anaesthetic had worn off properly. With this operation it's important that he doesn't knock his stitches otherwise he will have to have the operation done again. I'm scared about how I will manage.

When he had a major operation when he was a baby they gave him a fairly large dose of morphine and tramadol the first evening so he would sleep through the worst part. Not sure if that's an option now or not. I'm not too worried about when we get home but I'm worried about while he is in hospital. I've arranged for him to video call 2 of his friends from hospital and I've got a tablet, colouring etc for him to do but I'm still worried that his body is going to struggle while his brain is still going at his usual speed.

let the anaesthetist know how he reacted to the midazolam (some people do have a paradoxical reaction to benzos). There are other drug options if he needs an anxiolytic pre-med. (Doi: anaesthetist)

Thankyou. I will tell the anaesthetist. Will on the day be all right as I don't think I will know which anaesthetist it will be in advance or how to contact them. The person who did the admission form asked if he needed a pre med and I said yes but not midazolam so hopefully the anaesthetist will see that as well.
