long post

My lo was recently admitted to hospital with what they thought was whooping cough.
we brought her in as She was struggling to breathe, sucking her belly under her ribs and her throat was puckering when she was breathing & very pale. She was also refusing food water and her wet nappies were down to half what they normally are. She would get into a fit of coughing and her whole face would turn bright red then almost purple as she tried to recover.
her oxygen was down to 85 in the ED, they had her on oxygen for around 24 hours & 2 inhalers every 2 hours, 6 puffs of blue and 4 puffs of I think it was brown.

She was admitted and began receiving oral antibiotics, IV antibiotics, IV fluids, and a blue inhaler 2puffs every 4 hours, all for the suspected whooping cough.

After 2 days on a ward she caught Norovirus, so she was in a really bad way between throwing up, diarrhoea and how ill she already was prior.

She was weak and listless during her hospital stay, her bloods came back that she has high liver enzymes. Her chest xray showed something but the doctor said a few times its nothing to be concerned with.
The nasal swab tests eventually came back negative for whooping cough, but positive for Human Coronavirus which the doc said wasn’t the same as covid19, it’s the original virus.
Her Dr was really concerned for her as she had both of these viruses.
On day 8 she eventually had some energy when the dr visited the ward, and was off all IV meds/fluids and had taken plenty of fluids (750ml in 24 hours) and was interested in food again. So we were discharged with an appointment to check Liver enzymes in 4 months time.

We are home 3 days, and her energy levels are really low. she seems almost weak. She is interested in food and is drinking enough but not what she normally would have. She was a little fish for water prior to this illness. Her stool was normal until this morning she had diarrhoea 3 times. Over the past 3 nights she has thrown up two nights, and it was a huge amount of vomit, almost everything she had eaten for the day. She also has a little fungal circle on her cheek, my husband suffers with this regularly but has no flare ups at present.

A bit of background, she has had viruses almost non stop since last October(we are now March) her twin brother also caught most of these viruses but fought them much better and would be over them in 2-3 days. My daughter would take 1-2 weeks to recover and then be hit again with something.
in January she was treated at home for bronchiolitis, the doctor gave a 7 day antibiotic and i requested an extra 3 days. She still wasn’t 100% and was still coughing after the antibiotics so two weeks later i returned and we discussed the possibility of asthma or allergies. My GP put her on a blue inhaler 2puffs twice a day and piriton 2.5mls twice a day. We didn’t see a huge difference, and continued this for 5 weeks, until her hospital admission.

So my main concern is that there is some underlying illness, like an autoimmune like coeliac disease causing a low immune system or something more sinister going on with her.
My mammy gut is saying there is something definitely up.
her stomach is quite bloated since she was admitted. She has lost some weight and as i said previously she is lethargic.
This is a child who walked at 11mo and was climbing sofas and chairs by 12mo, she was a live wire and such a busy little baby.
I used to laugh thinking she had done at least 10,000 steps by midday!

Should I be worried and investigate the possibility of something more sinister going on, or is this just a normal recovery for a toddler who endured both of those viruses at once?
should I sit on it for another week to see if she gets back to herself fully?

I am hesitant to return to the ED as she has no urgent symptoms and she absolutely hated the whole hospital thing with a passion!

This sounds really tough for you all. Poor little thing. As hard as it is, I would return to the hospital and ask for reassurances. Especially if she is still vomiting. I can understand you worrying that it could be something more sinister but would like to think that her hospital stay would have flagged anything up. I am assuming that they did a full blood count while she was there?

That sounds soul destroying. My son was admitted in January for 2 nights with norovirus (severe dehydration) which me and his dad then caught after him and that alone took a week for him to recover his energy levels from never mind throwing coronavirus on top of it and he's 10yrs old, however he does have coeliacs disease, he's 6 months gluten free since diagnosis.

He was very weak and spent the first two full days after discharge in bed however the vomiting had thankfully stopped. Is this her first time ever having a stomach bug? I do think the first time an immune system encounters a new germ it takes much longer to recover. The food she's eating is it following the bland brat diet? After a tummy bug anything heavy like dairy or richer foods can cause continual vomiting because the lining of the stomach is so irritated.

@Ecotype Yeah i would presume once they took bloods that they would do a FBC, but nothing was mentioned and I already had so many questions for the doctor that I never thought to ask that. I am going to monitor her overnight and bring her to ED tomorrow if She throws up again

@Realisation14 yes we both caught the Norovirus, I wasn’t as bad as my husband I caught it first and stayed away from the hospital and then my husband got hit!
Fortunately my son didn’t get the virus!

yes its her first ever stomach bug, and what a first!

her diet is bland, besides a small yogurt. But she is still taking formula, I have them on Goats milk formula.
Were there bug red flags for your so s diagnosis of celiac?

Exactly the same as us, our other child didn't catch it at all!

Yes I think their first time with a stomach bug it's very reactive as the immune system has never encountered this virus before. Does she need the formula, will she drink other fluids like apple juice, water, ice lollies etc just for a week or so?

Yes his coeliac symptoms were constipation, vomiting or dry wretching, reflux, not gaining weight, decreased appetite, fatigue, headaches, paleness, then when this was investigated it also showed low iron and raised liver enzymes - that prompted the coeliacs testing.

JustTTC · 01/04/2025 07:23

@Realisation14 My lo has some of those symptoms, even pre viruses. The bloating, reflux, pale, she hasn’t seemed to grow very much since she turned 1 but that could just be genetics because im quite petite. Headaches etc she’s too young to tell, but her stool was never consistent and with the liver enzymes I just thought it might be celiac. I also suffer with gastrointestinal issues but have been tested for chrons and celiac several times and its always negative, so again she could just have genetic gut issues!

Update to her recent stomach issues post norovirus i researched (googled) and found that kids can have a temporary lactose intolerance after that can last weeks to months, so I have her on a lactose free diet, switched from formula to lactose free full fat milk for her bottle and cut out all other dairy and she has much improved, her appetite is amazing m, even better than it was before, and she was already a pretty good eater!
The sore on her face has grown so I am bringing her to my GP today as I think its a fungal infection, and couldn’t get an appointment until today!

thanks for your help!

I would definitely list those symptoms to the GP and ask for a coeliacs test for her, better to know for sure. Glad the symptoms are settling, bar the face sore - hopefully they can give something to clear it up. Skin rashes are also a symptom of coeliacs btw!

Hi @JustTTC how is your little one getting on? We’ve had similar experiences to you with our daughter but it sounds like you have really been through the wringer with it all. If your daughter does have a fungal infection (on top of the unrelenting bugs) I would seek immune testing. I say this because we instigated conversations around this for our daughter but what the consultant did say is constant bugs can be normal, however, “odd and wonderful” infections like fungal can be an indication of immune compromised, or if they aren’t able to get rid of them. I truly hope it’s just a course of bad luck for you all and she will come out the other side, but wanted to share the little insight I have from our conversations so far.

JustTTC · 16/04/2025 14:44

@Iggy24 thank you, she is just so little its awful to see her so unwell.
We have actually just been discharged from hospital again, this time she had Rhinovirus (common cold) but she went into respiratory distress very suddenly overnight. She just had a runny nose on Tuesday and woke up at 1am Wednesday acting a bit funny and by 4am we were getting ready for the ED as she was struggling to breathe. Her sats were down to 82 and her heart rate was extremely high. We didn’t get her Sats back up til Saturday to about 94/95, they gave her magnesium sulfate via IV they said this was to try to open the airways but it didn’t work, she was on constant oxygen, and moved to the fast flow oxygen pretty quickly. She was on an IV the whole time too, and nebulizers were given hourly. Her pallor was 3 when she was first admitted according to the nurse, and was an 8 after a few hours. We were discharged on Sunday with a salbutamol inhaler, but they wont confirm asthma at such a young age. The fungal infection was confirmed as ringworm by my GP, he treated it with dactorin & canesten creams, and its healing slowly but we were told it would take three weeks to heal.
was your LO diagnosed with an autoimmune disease?
