Husband D&V keeping baby safe

Krumblina · 20/03/2025 12:05

My husband has had a d&v bug. We have a 4 month old baby.
It's been 48 hours now since he was last unwell.
We've been staying away and neither me or baby are ill so fingers crossed as it's been 48 hours we have dodged it.
We are thinking stay apart of 72 hours just in case.
I keep reading you can shed the virus for up to 2 weeks. Does he need to isolate for that long from us? I desperately don't want us to get ill.
We've cleaned everything but I'm unsure if the products used will kill it. I was thinking of making up Milton solution and cleaning everything. Would this do the trick?

48 hours is fine. Avoiding him for 2 weeks is utterly bizarre and maybe you should reach out to your GP for help for you mental health as your reaction to a sickness bug is really not proportionate

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/03/2025 16:50

That’s insane. It’s a sickness bug, not the end of the world.

BucketFacer · 20/03/2025 16:53

2 weeks is way over the top. Do you have emetophobia?

CocoPlum · 20/03/2025 17:11

48 hours from last incidence should be fine. Maintain good hand hygiene.

Are you breastfeeding?

Coffeeishot · 20/03/2025 17:14

If you work in childcare it's 48 hours after the last bout of D&V 72 hours is you being extra cautious,2 weeks is just silly isn't it?

Dairymilkisminging · 20/03/2025 18:23

It's two weeks for swimming isn't it but 48 hours until normal activity

Ok thank you
Do you think Milton will kill it?

Yes if you wipe surfaces with milton it should kill off bacteria.

MissHollysDolly · 20/03/2025 19:53

It can live on surfaces for up to 6 weeks, so buckle up if you want to be totally safe. Or, stop being so precious. It’s a tummy bug. Not Ebola.

Yes I'm breastfeeding.

Ok then baby should be absolutely fine. You'll be producing antibodies if you've been exposed and this will come through in your milk. If your baby has been exposed your skin will absorb their saliva and your body will respond with antibodies.

I suggest keeping a 48 hour distance and preferably asking your husband to use a different bathroom, but please don't stress.

How are you generally? For me personally, anxiety about me/the kids getting a stomach bug was how my anxiety manifested. I take sertraline which has been game changing - it's absolutely fine when you are BFing.

I am very anxious. I've been on sertraline a long time. Thank you for your reply.
It was pretty stressful as my husband was very violently unwell with, fainted and appeared to stop breathing. It's been quite traumatic so keen for baby not to go through that!

Do you need your dosage upping? 4 months can be a tough time with a baby and it may need a tweak.

That's a really scary thing to happen. I think even if you feel poorly, baby will be fine. As well as the antibodies, breastmilk will keep her gut as healthy as possible.

I hope you all stay healthy/feel better soon x
