Suggestions on how to get baby to take medicine

My 14 week old breastfed baby has been prescribed omeprazole dispersible tablets, you mix them with water and they dissolve, iv tried giving her it in a bottle she totally refuses and screams the house down, iv tried mixing them with breastmilk, same outcome, i tried water with 2.5 ml of gripe water to make it sweeter, same outcome, this morning iv resorted to syringe feeding her it with a dentinox syringe and had to force it down her and my god she has gotten her self in such a state, has anyone got any suggestions on how else i could try administer this to her? Feel awful with how upset she’s getting over it, they do a liquid form but the doctor said the prescription is £115 on the nhs so they don’t like to prescribe and it unless absolutely necessary so really need to figure this out some how

They should have helped you by showing you how to administer the medication. How silly of them. Swaddle her in a towel. Hold her on your lap cuddled in tight. Insert the syringe between her cheek and teeth so the end is outside where her molars will be. Press slowly or in lots of little goes so she doesn’t get flooded. Be calm and authoritative and cuddle and feed her afterwards.

DD2 has been on the omeprazole tablets since 6 or 7 weeks old, so I sympathise. A few tips:

  • The tablet disperses better in warm water than in cold.
  • You want a syringe with a decent sized hole – nurofen and calpol ones work well, the ones our local pharmacies give out don't (although this may vary, I've got one from hospital that is very good). If the one you've got works without too many blockages, great!
  • Hold baby reclining on your lap and try to squirt the liquid into her cheek near the back – not straight to the back of her throat.
  • Don't try to squirt too much at once – at 6-7 weeks, DD2 took it 0.5 mL at a time. Give baby a chance to swallow before doing more, you'll find a sort of rhythm to this.
  • If you get a blockage, pull the plunger back a little or try tapping the syringe on the table.

Nb mix with one or a half syringe of water. Draw it back and forth a few times to mix it. If you leave it for a few mins it will be less gritty.

Will give these a go tomorrow and hopefully she won’t get herself so upset about it, she’s a very angry baby as it is (assuming that because of the colic) so really don’t want to be giving her a harder time than she’s already having bless her, thank you ❤️

Because of the reflux even, not colic 😅
