Ear thermometer reading wrong??

Hi all! I’ve been using Braun thermoscan 3 as DH woke me in the middle of the night last night to say son felt really warm! This evening the thermometer keeps reading at around 40c for my son but he seems fine in himself and doesn’t feel majorly hot? Is there a way to do this wrong causing a high reading?

Use it on yourself, what does it say?

I always do a couple of readings in both ears and take an average!

It’s reading normal at 37 for me! But wondering if maybe I could be putting it in too far for my son or ear wax could be causing it to be higher? Not sure sorry just don’t want to panic for no reason!

I pull the ear out a bit when I use an in ear thermometer...it seems to need a straight line in ...

Earwax will not be raising his temperature.

Is he teething? Does he have any other symptoms?Have you tried giving him some Calpol?

Perhaps try calling 111 for advice?

Braun is usually very accurate, I think the NHS guidelines are treat the child not the fever so if he isn’t acting ill just don’t over dress him for bed and light covers to keep him cool. If he is prone to febrile seizures obviously take action but he might just be fighting something off.

Treat the child not the fever is what I have been told by doctors as both my children can run really high temperatures and don’t appear that unwell. If temp carry’s on for 5 days best to see a doctor
