Any IBD / IBS parent have any tips or suggests. DD is currently undergoing tests of IBD she’s had months of pain, loose and runny stools, sometimes pure blood. Over the last week or so she’s become constipated and now her back passage hurts immensely and is rather swollen which it’s not usually and wasn’t yesterday.

we have given her regular calpol and trying to ensure she lays and avoided sat on the loo to long. I’m trying to hold out to see our GP tomorrow any help would be appreciated

How old is she? Is she sore inside the rectum or outside?

RedFamily · 16/03/2025 21:26

She has pain both, but the outside pain is worse. She is 8

I strongly suggest Sudocrem for her back passage. It's really soothing, healing and will make things easier when she wipes. (Great before a colonoscopy when prepping too).

Thank you @farmlife2 I have popped on nappy spray. We accidentally left the Sudocrem in the leisure centre today. I also wonder if the pool chemicals have irritated her too. But I think it's more from the straining. Colonoscopy prep is truily awful

Hi there,

How did your daughter get on with the test, did you get answers?

RedFamily · 16/05/2025 17:09

Hey, we are still under investigation. We spent about a week in the hospital at the end of last month with rectal bleeding. They have suggested it might be IBD or some sort of autoimmune issue, but they want the bloods to show more to formally diagnose. Still trying to manage her pain which is difficult at times x

Oh ok did anything show up on the colonoscopy because usually they take biopsies to determine what it is.

Only know that because it was how my daughter was diagnosed with IBD Crohn’s disease.

They did indeed but they said something happened in the lap and they couldn’t use the biopsy so she will have it redone soon ffs.

@Lbet how old is your DD?

Hi Redfamily, my DD has Crohn's as well, severe symptoms from 10 and diagnosed age 11. She's 15 (just) now.

The time before diagnosis is the hardest. Once they know what they are dealing with they are in my experience really helpful and supportive.

If it looks like she has Crohn's the first line of treatment is usually an 8 week liquid diet, just to warn you. If it's ulcerative colitis (which it may be, with the bleeding) it's usually steroids I think to get things under control.

If she gets a diagnosis I would really recommend the Facebook page "UK parents of kids with IBD" or something very similar. It's where I learned almost everything!
