Hey I was just wondering if someone could help me , I've been putting it of quite a while now but I just can't keep up or afford my child's needs on small income the problem is she's bowl incontinence we're school is ringing me to come collect her to change or , or if she isn't bad to cha ge her in school then take her back she's been under tests which I've nk answers to why she's doing it she needs changed 4 5 times a day she is 9 and also got referred for adhd only evidence I have is letter stating from school would orcould I apply for dla for as its costing me fortune on clothes mattresses etc she's 9 years old and children her age don't do this so her care needs are higher than a child her age she's also in mainstream school and she obviously wouldn't wear a nappy etc or would be allowed. Is it worth a try any advise welcome please just new here

It's definitely worth applying for DLA. I don't know if you have tiktok but there's a woman who has just applied for her twins who have similar, her username is xamycoxx and she has a video on how she applied for DLA which may be useful.
In terms of day to day, does she have any additional needs aside from this? If not, could she change herself rather than you having to come into the school? If she could put one of these liners in her underwear Abena Let Mini (500ml) 32 Pack then it could either be a case of her taking that out and replacing it in the toilets (like she will do a period pad), or changing her pants if needs be from a spare pair in her bag, and popping the used ones in a plastic bag to take home to wash/

Looking for the confidence that you get from your usual product, but without the cost? Why not consider trying Vivactive Lady Discreet Extra Pads? For Light Incontinence, these convenient pads are made from a soft, ultra-thin material, and can be worn...

See this has been going on from no age she just recently had scans of bowls etc but don't know the outcome yet she's also been referred for adhd she can't clean herself and if it wasn't to clean her she would just sit like that all day I've a letter saying she's been doing it from year one now she's year 5 if I've asked her to cha ge herself she would smear it everywhere so that's why I would do it and she wouldn't be able to fully clean herself properly. I've to bath her etc as she has no signs of danger and once she was in Bath while I hoovered down stairs and fell asleep. Sk she's to be supervised at All times I just don't know if I've enough evidence I just don't m ow what to do

What avenue has she been referred to for ADHD? I'd ring the doctors and ask where she is on the wait list. If she isn't near the top, ask to go down the right to choose pathway. It's still entirely free as its NHS funded but the wait times are much, much faster. Psicon offer them, and have a guide on how to do this on their website. Right to Choose UK | NHS Referral Process | Psicon. Did the GP mention ASD to you at all? Psicon will assess for that too if the GP agrees to refer her for an ASD assessment if they feel she meets the criteria.

In regards to the DLA claim, call the DLA helpline and talk things through with them. They can give you information as to what evidence you need to provide, or you can tell them what evidence you can provide and they can let you know if that will be enough. The number is 0800 121 4600.

ERIC is also an extremely useful resource and it is worth getting in touch with them. They have a webchat option but your best bet is probably their phone line, which you can find details of here: Helpline - ERIC

I'd also get an EHCP plan in place. You don't need any formal diagnosis but it will help your DD to access help and support in school, and will make things much easier as she gets older with secondary schools etc. Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND): Extra help - GOV.UK

Thank you so much for all this information my daughter was referred for the adhd assessment by NHS when she went to hospital last month they referred her the pediatrician I also went to the doctors with her and they told me of I wanted referred I'd have to go private now 😢

Were they saying you'd have to go privately for the ADHD diagnosis? I'd make an appointment for her to discuss being referred for an ASD assessment, and ask to be put down through the right to choose pathway within that appointment. Explain your concerns about how she can't be left alone etc.

The charity Cerebra have a helpful guide to filling in DLA applications. If you phone up and request the DLA form then any award is backdated to the day you phoned (they take a long time to process) but this doesn’t apply if you print out the form yourself from the website.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - Cerebra

Our guide takes you through each question on the DLA form, giving you explanations of what they mean and tips on how to answer them. This guide is for England and Wales only.

For both when I brought my daughter to the doctors but the hospital sent her referral for adhd but couldn't do autism she said about my doctor to do it. Here own doctor said to go private 🙄 I just feel like I'm stuck and no-one wants to help.

Go back to the doctors. I know it's difficult and feels like you're getting nowhere, but some doctors just seem to need to see that you're not just going to leave it before they actually do something. Bring a list with you of symptoms your daughter has, make a note of the fact that the hospital told you to go and see them (and write down what department told you to do this), and mention the right to choose scheme. Write everything down before you go so when you do go, it's a case of presenting it to them. Make sure that they note that you can't afford to go privately, make it clear it's not an option.

Have you tried your local continence team? If you google you should be able to find a local one who might be able to offer you support.

Heynewhere · 16/03/2025 20:39

TBH, leaving a child in the bath upstairs whilst you hoover up downstairs is not a good idea.
Also, you’d be surprised at how many children the same age as your DD and older have encopresis - have you seen an encopresis nurse? They should be working with you and your DD plus staff in school.

Are you sure they didn’t mean that you can apply via the ‘Right to Choose’ system? This is where certain private clinics can carry out the assessments but it is funded under the NHS. Lots of health authorities are doing this in order to reduce waiting list times.
