Toddler's mouth bled overnight?

Hi all - just wanted some opinions as I couldn't find anything online. This morning my son (2y 10m) woke up to a little puddle of dried blood on his pillow (about the size of a large coin) and some dried blood on his bottom lip (so I am assuming the blood came from his mouth).

He has been a bit under the weather, in a kind of non-descript way (slightly mad behaviourally, extra tired, did have swollen tonsils one day). But nothing overt.

Any ideas what this could be? When would you be concerned about this/when should I reach out to a dr?

I doubt it's anything gum related as his gums look great (though I am not a dentist so obviously can't confirm this). I thought maybe the tonsils? We can't see any obvious cuts.

My son had this when he was about 3! We eventually worked out that he’d had a lip tie on his upper lip which had somehow ‘popped’ in the night. Not saying it’s the same for your son but it could be an explanation?

(Obviously don’t rule out getting him checked over if you think he needs it!)

My daughter had this a few times and had bitten the sides of her tongue in her sleep

Following as we recently had this with DD1 (3.5yo) but around her top teeth. It happened on around 3 different occasions? I took her to the dentist and the dentist couldn't see any issues. I'm contemplating booking a GP appointment but I'm not sure what to ask for? She had also been a bit run down so I've got her some better vitamins, which she's taking more consistently and so far the issue hasn't repeated. She has a wooden bed and into also wondered if she'd cut herself on the side of the bed or something, but I couldn't see anything obvious.

Interesting! I actually had been wondering if he had any ties because he has major airways issues (and have plans to book him into an airways dentist) so will ask about this. Thanks!

Good idea, if he'll let me I'll try and get a peek inside his mouth (though I don't like my odds of actually getting a proper look haha).

That's exactly what I'm thinking! I can't quite figure out what I'm asking about haha. I have a dr appt for myself in a week (antenatal) so I might just sneak in a question about this haha.

Oh this is interesting, DD also always has her mouth open when she's sleeping and was a terrible feeder as a baby. We've been recommended a specialist dentist to go to but it's like £300+ for a consultation so going to have to wait a bit as I've only just gone back to work after mat leave. Maybe I should investigate lip ties further.

I know right, it's outrageously expensive! But I feel it's so worth it - my son had hourly wakes for soooo long until we started addressing the airways stuff. The other thing I've been looking at for airways which is cheaper is myofacial therapy. Stuff like this: https://www.instagram.com/toothpillow_official/ There's online programs, but I've found local people and they're way cheaper than airways dentists! Might be worth a look.
