Dry drowning?

My 8 month old drank from an open cup for the first time today, he choked on the water didn't cough but couldn't breathe for a second until I patted his back. I have heard about dry drowning before and am worried but idk if I'm over reacting?

I had to look it up - never heard of it. This article says “It doesn't happen without clear signs you can spot early on” and it’s very rare. See the list they give - https://www.parents.com/kids/safety/outdoor/dry-drowning/#:~:text=2%20%22Dry%20drowning%2C%22%20on,soon%20after%20exiting%20the%20water.

Tbh I think you’re probably overthinking, but no one here can tell you that with certainty! If you’re worried you’re best calling a doctor - I wouldn’t mess about waiting for answers on the internet with that kind of thing.

It sounds like he choked a little on a mouthful of water, which is a really normal occurrence for babies this age and not something to worry about.

It can make them lose their breath a little as it moves faster than they’re used to, if that makes sense? If he didn’t cough, I’d be surprised if he aspirated any. Not a medic, though.

Ex lifeguard here. It can happen if you drown and then get rescued. I learnt about this and choking in my lifeguard training and there was never any mention of it after drinking.

Your DC would be clearly very unwell with dry drowning.

A term that fits better seems to be secondary drowning where it can show up to 24h after the incident, I know I'm probably overreacting thankyou for all the feedback
