But if a weird one but does anybody else’s children stink after they eat fish, I use to think nursery were using poor quality fish fingers ir something as the next day her wee would smell so bad and fishy. Hadn’t noticed for the past year but a recent coeliac diagnosis and her body is going through a lot, but every time she eats fish the next day she really doesn’t smell good and I feel so sad for her. I feel like it’s related to the lack of enzymes in her gut due to the coeliacs and being in recovery , but will she grow out of this! Feeel like I’m having to cut out everything that’s good for her at the moment , but I don’t want her to smell
like fish

Embarrassing but I notice it in myself if I eat fish. Only the next day after eating fish and no other time. I asked a doctor once and they said it wasn’t possible…

There's something called fish odour syndrome, but I know nothing about it. Just saw it mentioned in the film The Holdovers.

We've used this high CFU probiotic for years on my DD who has issues which make her smell. Subscription on Amazon.

It does make a significant difference.

Darkclothes · 12/03/2025 16:49

Its not asparagus is it? That can make your urine stink, but apparently not everyone can smell it.

As someone else said there is a medical condition called fish odour syndrome. Strangely, fresh water fish doesn't cause it though!

This happens to me. Years ago I had all kinds of swabs etc and no BV or other infection was found. I was very embarrassed by it. But since noticing the link with fish, I just avoid eating fish and I've not had the problem since....I don't know if there's a name for it, I researched it online but didn't find anything much. Happy to just not eat fish now....

JJkate · 12/03/2025 16:50

Hi, I have something wrong with my digestion, am waiting on coeliac and food intolerance tests. I have the same reaction to fish and other foods.

I did think I might have this but for me the odour is only when I eat fish and not all the time so I don't think it fits.
Interestingly I am currently waiting for the results of a coeliac blood test, as per a pp....

Helpful as ever! There is a real thing I know but I thought it was quite rare, some
people do actually emit an odour after eating food and fish is a big one, I just don’t know if it’s common in children. It’s always the next day too

Really interesting it must be linked to the coeliacs then! Gah this is the most frustrating disease ever, the probiotic sounds like a good idea, we re using optibac at the moment .
thanks for the support!

She needs a good probiotic, ideally with lactobacillus.

LegoInfestation · 13/03/2025 02:57

Can anyone recommend a good probiotic for kids that doesn't contain gums or artificial sweeteners?

Strangeonthenet · 13/03/2025 03:31

My mum finds this, the smell kind of comes out of her pores. She just avoids fish now. She is not coeliac.

Chazzalazza · 13/03/2025 07:53

Optibac is brilliant

I’m not coeliac and don’t have it with any other foods other than fish.

minnienono · 13/03/2025 07:58

Never heard of fish causing an issue but asparagus makes urine smell and lingers in the bathroom unless I put bleach down after I flush. Beetroot makes urine go purple Grin.

Experiment because it might not be all fish, try freshwater fish and see if that has the same effect.

Chazzalazza · 13/03/2025 11:46

It’s just fish not asparagus or beetroot, unforitnately
my my daughter is not partial to such veggies at the moment!

I have this. But weirdly only with cod. I can eat sea bass, salmon and even tuna but not cod, and even worse if it’s from the chippy.

purplecorkheart · 13/03/2025 12:13

Yes, I have this. I tend to avoid fish now. It is only the day after I have eaten fish. Showering/bathing makes no difference. It is gone the following day.
