Scarlet Fever and Swimming

Hi,
this is probably a very stupid question but I wanted to check others thoughts. DD was diagnosed with scarlet fever yesterday. She's on antibiotics, so technically will not be contagious by this evening.

She has a swimming lesson on Friday and I don't know whether to cancel now, or play it by ear depending on how she's doing the rest of the week.

She was full of beans this morning, temperature seems to have come down and I really hope it stays down. She'll be off nursery until at least Wednesday due to their exclusion policy anyway, but was going to keep her off for as long as needed in relation to how she was feeling, regardless of when she is allowed to go back in.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

I'd wait and see how she Is later on in the week it's all about how she is isn't it?

Rawnotblended · 10/03/2025 10:03

No. Just no.

It’s a reportable disease, for a start and secondly she will only stop being contagious if the antibiotics work and given that there’s such a great deal of resistance, there’s a very good chance that the disease will just run its course, and not be knocked out by the AB.

Please PLEASE keep her off.

PrincessAnne5Eva · 10/03/2025 10:04

I'd keep her off.

Hoppinggreen · 10/03/2025 10:05

DS had this at nursery but wasn't actually very ill with it so I didn't realise it was a big deal until his preschool told me it was a Notifiable disease when I called to say he wouldn't be in that day.
I don't think its as serious as it used to be now we have antibiotics etc but its still best to keep your child away from others just in case and I would imagine swimming would be a no

TomatoSandwiches · 10/03/2025 10:06

My sons SF was not successfully treated with one course of antibiotics so no I wouldn't allow her to go swimming.

Do antibiotics work over night?

chillichoclove · 10/03/2025 10:07

Friday is five days away. There's limited resistance to strep A
I would expect her to be better, but going or not going by then will depend on how she feels as every child is different. Take a call on Wed afternoon

Unseenentity · 10/03/2025 10:11

The standard exclusion period for scarlet fever is 24h. Resistance to penicillins is essentially unheard of (for now!) for streptococci.

She'll probably feel better by Friday, but some illnesses knock some children back more than others - you'll probably have a clearer idea later in the week.

I had to run a conference with SF (SE so no time off for me). Felt grim. Child sailed through it though! Each person is different.

Did you tell the delegates and give them the option to pull out?

Give it a couple of days.
Mine weren't ill at all really with Scarlet Fever... the only clue was the rash. They had two days of school and were bouncing around on the second one.

All the guidelines say it isn't infectious after 24hrs on antibiotics... like many illnesses, its infectious before you get the symptoms.

Wolowl · 10/03/2025 10:56

Thanks all. Replies are what I thought, just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly cautious! I'd rather she is 100% better and has time to recover so will keep her off.

Do antibiotics work over night?

The NHS website says:

You can spread scarlet fever to other people until 24 hours after you take your 1st dose of antibiotics.

So supposedly she'll not be contagious by this afternoon. Dr said she'd be OK to go to nursery tomorrow! We are keeping her off anyway.

Wow, wouldn't have thought that, every day is a school day. Thank God for antibiotics!

Ohwhatswrong · 30/03/2025 09:20

I was wondering more if swimming would make the rash worse? My DD has been suffering with the itching but we really wanted to go swimming today but not if it's going to make it worse.
Did your Dd go swimming? Was the rash ok?

Wolowl · 30/03/2025 16:44

We didn't go as she wasn't better. Also came down with chicken pox the next day so thank goodness we stayed home!
