What could this be? Toddler foot pain?

Hi all.

I have taken my toddler to the doctors this morning and she really wasn't much help at all. I pushed a little and she is asking for me to keep a diary and come back in 4 weeks time.

My son is just over 2 years old. Not long after he started walking (around 15 months) he began tip toe walking. Now I know this is quite common and a lot of toddlers do this. So I thought it was him just exploring and developing. Fast forward to now and he does this multiple times a day. 4-5 times at the very least. Multiple times a day he points at his feet and says the word hurting. This is both feet, not just one. He knows what this word means as we obviously use this if he has fallen or hurts himself in any way. He has begun waking crying in the night and again does the same thing. He doesn't wear tight shoes, his shoe of choice is wellies which are loose fitting and wears these most days.

Oddly enough he has quite flat feet but also a high arch on top. I asked the doctor about this and she told me because of his age she can't really tell anything as he will grow out of most things. She said it isn't anything neurological as she checked by tiggling his feet and he had a reaction to it.

Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? Is she correct in what she is saying? I am just concerned as it seems like they aren't really going to do anything about it and the fact that he is telling me his feet are hurting every day is worrying. I am thinking to go to a podiatrist/chiropodist but can they help with these things?

Any advice would be thankfully received!

Thanks all 😊

What are his shoes like? Off the shelf or properly measured? What about toenails, could they be digging in/ingrown and hurting in certain positions?

Could you try him in some really good properly fitted shoes and only them for a while to see if it makes any difference? Poor love.

See a good podiatrist who will examine his feet properly, advise on the best footwear and foot care. They will be able to refer back through your GP for X-rays if needed.
