A&E in the morning?

My 4yo had a bit of a bump to her foot on the escalator today. Seemed like a non-event but she was very upset for a good 20 minutes afterwards (never the case with her). She struggled to walk or weight bear all day but when sat or laid down (anything where she’s not weight bearing) she’s happy as anything. Won’t let us touch the foot. But I can see a bump on the top of the foot (no bruising, minor swelling). Bar a miraculous recovery overnight, is it best to visit A&E to rule out a fracture or break in the morning? Could this be something more sinister?

she needs to go if she can't weight bear

If she were my daughter, I would see how she was in the morning. If there’s more swelling or pain, and she still struggles to bear weight, I would definitely take her in.

I’m sure you’ll have people saying take her in now, but she’ll be lying down all night and might feel better after a good rest.

I think if your thinking she needs to go to an and e then she should be seen tonight ? Better to be safe than sorry

Where I am, minor injuries would be more appropriate for such an injury. Not A and E. Especially if the accident occurred the day before. But yes if she wakes up unable to weightbear I’d call 111 as you may get an appt at a minor injury clinic or an appt time for an X-ray.

I'd absolutely see how she is in the morning. I suspected my DD had a broken toe, and the only way to diagnose is xray, I left it overnight, and got her out of bed at 5am the next morning (we were picking friends up for a theme park day out at 8am).
We were through A&E in less than an hour, xray complete and no break.

Get up early and go in if you can. But she may reach if overnight and be ok.

I'd call 111 in the morning and get an xray at minor injuries..sound like a broken foot bone to me (my DD had the same symptoms).

What was the process after a broken foot?

She was in a walking boot for 6 weeks, she was a lot older than your dd though.. she broke her 2nd meta tarsal.

You could save yourself a lot of waiting if you could go to a minor injuries/urgent care centre rather than A&E. I would definitely take her if she is still struggling to weight bear this morning

Thank you for asking! No fractures - probably just a sprain. Right as rain and hopping about all day today. So glad and glad we got her seen too.
