Hip Dysplasia

My newborn has been diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia in both hips and is now in a harness.

Has anyone had any success stories with the harness with a severe case. If not what route did you then progress to?

A friend's little boy had hip dysplasia. One hip went back in with the harness but the other one didn't. He had surgery to tie it into the joint when he was about 18-24 months and was in a whole pelvis plaster cast for a while after that. He wasn't able to walk before that point, and is about four now and walks with a bit of a limp. Has been told he'll probably need a hip replacement in his late teens/early twenties but should be ok until then. Best of luck to your little one.

My daughter was diagnosed and in a harness at 2 weeks old. Her angles were 30 degrees for both hips and 1 hip was totally dislocated and 1 hip partially dislocated.

After 26 weeks in harness (14 weeks 24/7) it has been a complete success. She is now 8 and no problems so far at all. We had a minor fear last year it was back but an xray and an appointment with the consultant ruled it was a muscle strain and her hipe are totally healthy.

I know it's hard, and your newborn feels all odd and like they have a kind of shell on, but it will be worth it. I can highly recommend Next Harem Playsuits for clothes. They are perfect for the pavlik. I can also recommend slumbersac for a pavlik friendly sleeping bag.

My DC was born with bilateral hip dysplasia.

They were breech so it was picked up during a scan at about 6 weeks. We tried a harness but it was unsuccessful. The hip socket wasn’t quite developed either.

DC had an operation just after 12mths & had pins/plates & a further operation to remove them. They were in a frog cast for about 18mths.

if you want any info feel free to PM me.

DC is now 18 & you would never know they had the operation.

Wishing you all the best with your newborn🌷

I've had three DDs all diagnosed right after birth with this. All had the Pavlik harness for between 3 to 7 months, and although there were some points (especially with the youngest who had the most severe case), where it looked like it wasn't progressing as much as they'd have liked, it all turned out fine and there's been zero troubles since (eldest now 15).

I also had this issue myself as a baby and had plaster cast. I've never had any issues whatsoever with my hips/ legs/ mobility, thank God.
