Hi there I’m looking for some advice our baby boy currently 12 weeks and 4 days has come down with chickenpox on Monday after our daughter had it two weeks ago. Our boy is absolutely covered in them head to toe but I’m most concerned with the ones on his face I’m beginning to fear they are infected please could someone advise if they are thank you.

Unfortunately I think you are right. The redness surrounding that spot does look infected. Much easier to tell in a face to face consultation though

IfIwasablackbird · 22/02/2025 19:21

It looks like it, poor babe.
I would get him checked out fairly soon with him being so young.

TheMauveCritic · 22/02/2025 19:21

I did think so he has other spots that look the same on his chest and thighs as well. Saw the gp yesterday who gave him steroid cream but they have not improved and have only got worse today.

I definitely agree with you we will be taking him back to be seen on Monday at the latest.

They could be infected. Could he be seen over the weekend? Are you using calpol? Remember not to give ibuprofen (although it might not be age appropriate anyway). Might need antibiotics rather than a steroid cream.

TheMauveCritic · 22/02/2025 19:28

We have been using calpol since Monday which seems to be keeping his temperature to 37.9 when it wears off he’s 38.8. I think we are going to take him to be seen tomorrow as he’s deeply upset and not himself the steroid cream hasn’t touched it. Thank you we definitely won’t use ibuprofen.

Are you sure it’s a steroid cream? That would be an unusual choice for chicken pox

TheMauveCritic · 22/02/2025 19:39

It’s definitely steroid cream given yesterday as the doctor believed they were tracking but it just hasn’t touched the ones that were tracking at all they have just got worse today he has ones on his chest now like the ones on his face and one on his thigh the same to.

Steroids are usually avoided on infected skin as they can make an infection worse, however some creams contain steroids and antibiotics.
Could you call 111 and ask their advice? Especially as your little one is so young
Also would not be unreasonable to go to A&E because of their age

onetwothreefourfive11 · 22/02/2025 19:47

I would call 111 or go to A& E as it's been almost a week

They get seen to v quickly

That is so high for a baby so young!

I would go tonight if he is in distress

TheMauveCritic · 22/02/2025 19:50

Will definitely call 111 for advice and we will be taking him in as he’s not improving. We are both very worried about him. Wasn’t aware that a steroid cream could make the infection worse it’s definitely just a steroid cream was prescribed by gp yesterday. I won’t be putting anymore on his skin.

dementedpixie · 22/02/2025 20:19

Googling suggests steroid creams shouldn't be used on chickenpox as they can make it worse. Your poor baby, hope he gets the appropriate treatment soon and feels better quickly.

Have you tried things like poxclin or virasoothe?

TheMauveCritic · 22/02/2025 20:28

Omg we totally didn’t know that and have probably been making it worse all day today. As was prescribed by the gp I didn’t even think to question it. We have treid poxclin and it’s not made a difference.

With a baby that young with what looks like infected spots and a high temp I would go to A and E straight away

TheMauveCritic · 22/02/2025 20:48

We are most definitely taking him in tonight currently waiting for childcare for my eldest then he will be going to be seen. Hopefully we can get him on the mend.
