My partners family are located some 120 miles away which means 5/6 times a year we are required to make the trip over to north wales as they never come to see us.

i don’t mind and it can be a nice weekend away as there is lots to do and we tend to see the wider family and go out for meals etc.

however the main issue is we are expected to stay at my partners parents house. They have ample space so no excuses really, personal let I’ve never enjoyed it as the house isn’t as clean as my standards but the biggest problem is my partners dad smokes like a chimney and refuses to go outside.

we have a son who is 14 months old and so far I’ve managed to talk my other half into staying at a local caravan park.

But this is expensive and the sites are closed for the season. The dreaded call came in that they want to see us and I’m just dreading the thought of our little one being in a house full of smoke.

my partner says it’s fine as his dad smokes In the kitchen but you can smell it as soon as you walk into the front house. The walls are cream gone mocca brown he smokes so much.

i don’t want my son there but what can i do.

is it unreasonable to put my foot down?

Not unreasonable in the slightest.

In fact I'd argue the reverse that your partner and their family are unreasonable to expose a child to second hand smoke.

If you are unable to find alternative accommodation to visit (or to fund it) then the consequence is that your partner visits his family without you or your child.
