Staple removal

Ds needs some staples removed after having them done in A and E. . They told us to make an appointment with the GP in 7-10 days to have them removed but they don't have any appointments at all and said we need to go back to A and E and just wait to be seen and they'll remove them.

It's not an emergency so I don't think I can phone daily and ask the GP but it seems ridiculous to take up time and space in A and E for something like this.

I tried phoning A and E to check and they referred me back to GP again 😩

Does anyone know what reaction we'd get at A and E... or if I need to chase the GP again and again and beg for an appointment? I even tried some private clinics and offered to pay but they wouldn't do it... not brave enough to remove them ourselves!

Just go to A&E and wait it out.

Do you have a walk in centre you could go to?

Okayornot · 20/02/2025 07:33

Did you ask for an appointment with the GP or the practice nurse? It'll be the nurse who removes staples, and they may have some sort of wound clinic that can help.
This isn't a job for A&E.

I did ask for an appointment with the nurse but they have absolutely no appointments. I agree it isn't (or shouldn't be) a job for A and E- could go to Minor Injuries though, which is a long drive, if they're able to do it.

Ask for a practice nurse, I just had an appointment to remove a disposable stitch which hadn’t gone. I phoned after the rush and reception got me an out of hours appointment to get it done. Def not one for A&E but if your struggling I’d go to a walk in or minor injuries

Okayornot · 20/02/2025 08:15

It's just rubbish. The GP set up needs radical change.

Minor injuries should be able to help. I'd give them a call first to confirm they actually will rather than waste a drive.

I’d they give you the removal tool? Not all GP surgeries keep the tool in stock

doggybootcamp · 20/02/2025 16:23

Yes we have the removal tool.
