Bad ear infection after adenoidectomy

My son had his adenoids out two weeks ago, all went fine but he had emergence delirium and a lot of pain, it was very scary. He took the antibiotics perfectly that we were given and took the full course.

Last night he said he had ear ache, I had a look and could see a lot of wax again, he has glue ear that comes and goes.

Very early this morning we rushed him to a&e as he was screaming in pain, they diagnosed a very bad ear infection and he's been given stronger antibiotics for another 5 days, they said its likely the infection is coming from the adenoids site.

He was up the hospital about 6 hours, sleeping a lot there as he hadn't slept properly that night, kept waking up and crying.

He's 7, we usually start getting ready for bed about half 7 during the half term and in bed by 8, but he's been sleeping on and off all day, am I okay to just let him sleep if he needs it? He fell asleep again about half 3, woke up to try dinner but didn't want anything, went back to sleep and wakes up every sort of hour for a minute then sleeps again. His temperature was up and down at the hospital so keeping an eye on that.

Sounds like you’re doing the right things. As you say, keep an eye on his temperature and he’s probably needing sleep because he’s missed some and fighting the infection is using up energy.

He should begin to fancy something to eat today, even if it’s not a meal, and he does need fluids - water is usually best. However, if he sleeps virtually 24 hours and still doesn’t want to eat it’s probably worth using NHS 111 to get advice.

Thank you, he's woken up full of beans and having lots of cereal, randomly woke up in the middle of the night and asked for an apple and juice so I'm not so worried now 🩷
