17 month old chipped front tooth - options?

Hi everyone,

We were on a playdate today at my friend’s house as she has just welcomed her second baby. My DS was playing with her daughter and he was in her Little Tyke’s car in the playroom just off the living room.

DS was trying to get out the car and fell and started to cry. When I picked him up, he soothed right away and went back to play. About half an hour later, we were doing animal noises and I noticed he had chipped one of his front top teeth. I scrambled around to look for it but could see the broken bit.

Feeling like such a failure as a parent as we take good care of his teeth and always prioritise them. I’m phoning the dentist tomorrow to make an appointment to just check there’s no trauma to the gum etc. but he is absolutely fine in himself.

Just wondering if anyone else had had this happen to their little one and if they were presented with any options on how to fix the chipped tooth? I must admit, it is purely for cosmetic reasons I’m looking at options for getting it fixed.

This happened to my DD when she had just turned one, not long had her two front teeth then chipped both Sad not going to lie, I was gutted and shed many a tear over them! It was similar circumstances to your DS - didn't realise at the initial bump, she turned at smiled at me a while later and I almost had a heart attack.

The dentist won't do anything I'm afraid (well, in our case and others we know that experienced similar - turns out it's quite common to chip their teeth). They just pretty much said be glad it's not her permanent set. 8 months later they have naturally filed down quite a lot to be honest, her chips were at angles and they don't look as severe now. I felt so guilty too, but unfortunately these things do happen so don't be too hard on yourself

My little one chipped a tooth a few months ago. We actually ended up in A&E because it was embedded in the inside of their lip and I couldnt get it out.

The dentist didn't do anything but said just keep an eye because there was bruising on the gum so it may affect adult teeth growth later down the line. But this was quite a significant falling onto a brick wall from standing and they landed purely on their face and screamed for ages.

My boy chipped a front tooth at a similar age, he tripped and fell face first on the concrete in our farmyard, I felt pretty bad but these things do happen! Dentist just said it’s a good thing it’s not his adult teeth and not to worry. To be fair, the chip is much less noticeable now, although there is some discolouration on the tooth where he scuffed it and the chip itself has sort of rounded off again, and he’s still got a beautiful smile.
