9 month old with strange drowsy episodes. Migraine? Seizures? Any similar experiences???

I'm just posting on here because I can't find anything similar to our experience on Google! My 9 month old has been having weird episodes every 2-3 weeks for the last 5 months where she becomes quite suddenly agitated and distressed and unsettled for maybe 30-90 mins and then will sometimes at this point do 1 or 2 VERY large vomits (but only has vomited on maybe half of the occasions) and then she goes into a very very drowsy and hard to rouse state which lasts around half an hour but she will then remain very sleepy for a few hours afterwards. She sometimes gets a temp but not always. The drowsiness is my main concern.

A&E made us wait so long she wasn't even seen. GP isn't bothered about it. She's on a waiting list for paed urgent assessment but has now been triaged to 'routine' so won't get seen for over a year. I'm very concerned and at my wits end!

Just keen to hear if anyone has experienced anything similar with their baby/child??

Forgot to add she is totally normal in the run up to these, and afterwards. And she's absolutely fine in between episodes. Developing normally, etc. No other issues!

The frequency sounds quite high and the events are pretty unusual, and have carried on happening. I would go back to the GP and say you are very worried, they may be able to send a further request asking for the paediatric appointment to be made urgent.

If you have the opportunity to video how she is during/after they can sometimes send that for review as well.

Thanks @Unseenentity I agree it seems concerning! I have taken plenty of videos of these occurrences and asked GP for a second referral today (on advice of the paediatric service themselves) but the GP declined a re referral! Very frustrating. I think we will just have to go back to A&E when the next episode happens but was hoping maybe someone would have experienced similar

Could it be a febrile seizure?

Lady7978 · 13/02/2025 22:28

Check for febrile seizures and infections triggering seizures. A child I know had these triggered by ear infections. Keep pushing for a referral and if not, go straight to A&E next time.

This sounds scary OP. I wonder if it's reflux. DD2 has always suffered badly with it and I have noticed it can make her drowsy. It's easier to identify her episodes now she has the language to tell us, it was very difficult when she was a baby. Hope you get answers soon.

Thanks all, seizures were something I wondered about too. We've actually just received a referral letter to the epilepsy clinic today so must have been triaged to THEIR routine waiting list instead of general paeds one (the year long wait). A big relief! At least we'll get some sort of assessment soon and can rule in or out seizures 🙌

Hi, this may help but you should still check with your GP. My DD used to do exactly this. It started when she was a toddler, so a little older. She used to just sleep it off and there was nothing we could do to stop her going to sleep. It usually occurred when she was pretty tired and run down. We went to the GP and we both agreed it was Abdominal Migraines (I had researched). She grew out of it by the time she got to 8 or 9.

SLT90 · 15/02/2025 13:21

@notsurewhattowrite that was one of the things I had come across while googling too and I definitely think it could be! The GP said she'd never heard of it in babies so it probably wasn't that 🫠 will see what the epilepsy clinic comes up with
