MMR After Injections

My 1 year old Grand-Daughter had her 12 month injections 2 and a half weeks ago. She is always a very happy little baby and sleeps all night. Day 1 & 2 she was fine. Days 3 to 10 she was extremely grizzley, unsettled in the nights, upset & crying sobbing over anything, looked so sad and tired a lot. Eating and drinking as normal. Days 11 to 13 her normal happy self. Then on day 14 she woke up plastered in what looked like a measles rash all over her stomach, sides and back. Throughout the day the rash spread up to her neck and head. No rash on her arms or legs. Days 14, 15 and today she has been grizzley and hot. Very unsettled. Again eating and drinking as normal. We have been giving her calpol. Took a trip to the Drs and the Dr said she wasn't sure if it was a virus or from the MMR jabs. Just wondering if anyone else's little one has been like this?

It's unlikely to be the jabs. Any immune system reaction to them would have occurred in the first day or two. A virus seems more likely.

Yes both mine had the full measles rash after the mmr - the difference it only lasts about 36 hours.

With the eldest, I took her to the doctor with it and they said it was normal. They actually said as long as it goes down within a couple of days it's a great sign of developing v high immunity

This isn't true. The MMR has delayed reactions depending which component is involved

Like all medicines, the MMR vaccine can cause side effects, but not everyone will get them.
Common side effects are usually mild and only last 2 to 3 days, they include:

  • a raised, blotchy rash (similar to a measles rash), feeling unwell and a high temperature around 7 to 11 days after the vaccination
  • swollen glands around the cheeks, neck and jaw and aching in your joints (similar to a mild form of mumps) around 2 to 3 weeks after the vaccination
More serious side effects, such as a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) are rare. The person who vaccinates you will be trained to deal with allergic reactions and treat them immediately.

That’s wrong. The MMR does have a delayed reaction and a rash does appear around a week or two later.

Have a look at the NHS website for details on the side effects.
