28 days vomiting toddler

I'll start by saying been to GP 6 times, hospital twice including admission. Have a paediatric outpatient appointment requested by GP (no date) and have now contacted two private paediatric clinics (walking callback). So we are seeking medical attention even though I do feel unsupported.

3 year old had what seemed to be a viral bug with diarrhoea and vomiting which lasted six full days. Returned to nursery a couple of days later and then the following night appeared to have a SECOND stomach virus? Diarrhoea and vomiting. 28 days since this all started he is still having episodes of vomiting unable to keep down fluid, and mucus filled diarrhoea.

I have utterly lost my MIND. I'm 28 weeks pregnant, child unable to go to nursery as never 48 hours clear (he can go a couple of days being ok and it starts again)

He's losing weight. He's pale. He's mostly been on the sofa watching tv for four weeks. We've all lost so much sleep from the symptoms but also worry.

I cut out dairy about a week ago and then gluten a couple of days ago out of desperation thinking perhaps virus had triggered a food intolerance/allergy. Abdominal pain and vomiting has continued

Has anyone got ANY ideas? Both husband and I are doctors and we are desperate. Hospital and GP only interested if he is clinically dehydrated otherwise they say just wait for outpatient appointment

We're in Warwickshire and I've contacted a paediatrician in Birmingham and a paediatric gastroenterology clinic in Oxford ... if anyone has any recommendations please let me know. We don't have health insurance but I would spend what we do have on helping our little boy

How awful for you all. My though was try cutting all gluten. I have close friends whose kids are 9 and 6 both recently had coeliacs confirmed, and your boy's symptoms sound remarkably similar to theirs. You need to do if for a couple of months at least, because if he is coeliac, the gluten will have damaged his gut by now and it will need time to heal before the symptoms stop, even once he stops having gluten. Also remember that gluten isn't just in wheat. If he is coeliac, he needs to avoid everything with gluten in and everything contaminated with gluten (e.g. anything that had been touched by someone who's touched flour or a flour containing product without a thorough hand wash first.) I'm no medic and I've no idea if this is the case, but it does sound like out friends' experience.

Thank you for replying! It's the not knowing which is the most distressing for me as a parent , I even was crying today wondering if it's cancer although my husband is trying to convince me that doesn't fit the picture. My husband accidentally gave our son marmite yesterday which contains gluten so perhaps that explains today's vomiting and abdominal pain.

I feel so helpless whilst just sitting around waiting for an NHS OP appointment with no idea of a timeframe

Do you know what pathogen testing the GP has done? For that duration, I would be suspicious of parasites (eg Giardia - even in England) and this is NOT a routine screen for most hospitals. Also with finding out if his samples can go to local tertiary hospital or UKHSA lab rather than DGH. Their micro treating could be limited.

Further down my list would be a persistent or latent DNA virus (adenovirus or even CMV colitis). Do you have access to MyChart or any electronic medical records to check what tests have ACTUALLY been run? A friend's baby had enteric fever, was hospitalised and all they tested for was flu, RSV and COVID - for a stomach bug!

One final possibility - are you still breastfeeding? Is it possible that the colostrum coming through is acting as a laxative?

Theunamedcat · 09/02/2025 15:53

What are you feeding them?

There is a D&V bug that leaves the person with a temporary lactose intolerance.

By temporary I'm talking up to two years, not short term though. It might be worth looking at that.

Thanks for replies - we are now convinced it's Giardia.

Husband has finally caught it after helping to parent (!) over the weekend - vomiting and fishy diarrhoea. The house stinks of fish... we don't even eat fish!!

GP has been reluctant to give metronidazole without a positive stool sample but it's notoriously difficult to get a positive stool sample due to the life cycle. She thought it was "toddlers diarrhoea" seemingly ignoring that he is also vomiting!!

In desperation have booked private paediatric appointment for Thursday . Was up all last night vomiting

Husband will beg for antibiotics for himself from GP. It's been an educational experience for us being the patients not being listened to by the doctors 😬

The sickness bugs that have been going around at the moment are pretty persistent. It's been going around my daughters class since November. One of the boys in her class was sick in class 3 times over a few weeks.
If you are suspecting coeliacs you need to ask for testing before you remove gluten as for the tests you need to have had gluten in the diet for 4-6 weeks before they can do the test.
Any teeth coming through? That caused my daughter to reflux more mostly silent but occasionally vomiting and the most horrendous diarrhea.
My daughter has a sensitive stomach and so many things cause her to reflux and have diarrhea including multiple food allergies. It could be several things that have upset his stomach alongside repeat exposures to the stomach bugs.

Hi there, what has your gp said, have blood tests been done as well as the stool test, was the calprotectin levels given?

Tssabz · 05/05/2025 18:59

my toddler had severe pain in lower abdomen and he had an appendectomy. After that it’s been a week he vomited once and still pooping a little inconsistently. I can feel him being uneasy at nights… just waiting for this to pass whatever this is

Tssabz · 09/05/2025 00:07

I am waiting for the GI. But my sons pediatrician has done a stool test for buffet viruses or bacteria which all came back -ve
