Chickenpox fever

Hi everyone,

DD (age 4) is on day 4 of chickenpox. She has had a temperature with them since day 1. Websites seem to say the temperature comes before the spots, and this is what happened with DD1 when she got them a few years ago, but DD2 seems to have the fever with the rash at the same time. Is a fever for this many days normal with chickenpox? She's also quite lethargic, but that's to be expected. Just interested in hearing about other people's experiences with them, as DD1, despite her spots being awful, sailed through them with no fever or other signs of illness.

How's your DD today OP?

If a fever comes down with Calpol I wouldn't worry too much but if she is having very high fevers and if she's still lethargic after paracetamol I'd phone the GP for advice.

My DD was 3 when she had CP and she sailed through it like your DD1. She had one grotty night with a high temperature but was otherwise fine.

CP can make kids quite unwell though so trust your instincts and contact your GP if you're concerned.

@INeedNewShoes thanks so much for replying. I rang the GP this morning as her urine output had decreased, and we had the most awful night. She was pretty much up all night. She also still has a fever. The doctor thought he could hear something on her left lung, possibly the start of pneumonia/a chest infection, which can be a chickenpox complication. We have antibiotics and a fluid challenge to do. He is ringing us again tomorrow, and if no improvement he'll ring paeds at the hospital. Majorly regretting not getting her vaccinated.

Does she look bright red? DD2 had scarlet fever when she had chickenpox. Fortunately her sister had just had chickenpox so I knew there was something else going on when she looked like a tomato!

@Brodpit thankfully not! I have heard of children having them both at the same time. Nasty!

Oh good! Hopefully she’s picked up a bit as the day has gone on and the antibiotics have kicked in.
