Mouth ulcers or oral thrush

Hi all,

DS2 (14 weeks old) is being treated for oral thrush. He was checked last Wednesday and we were told to take a 7 day course of nystatin and then an additional 48 hour course to completely clear it, as he’s had it once before and it didn’t clear up.

When I look down DS’s throat, I can see white patches right at the back of the roof of his mouth. They’re really red and form a horizontal line across the roof. I can’t seem to get a good picture. I showed this to the GP last week and she was adamant it was thrush, but I really believe they are ulcers. It’s been a week of treatment and his white tongue has cleared up but not the roof of his mouth.

I’m wondering if the type of dummy he is using could be causing too much friction? The placement of the white and red patches is so specific. He has been really terrible at feeding since birth (breast fed for 2 months, now he is primarily bottle fed) but recently he is so so bad. He keeps pulling off the bottle constantly and it’s a battle to get him to have even an ounce of milk. He’s a lot better when he’s half asleep. I’m thinking these red sore patches are causing him a lot of discomfort.

I’ve stopped giving the dummies to him completely and will see how it goes. Will book a GP appointment with a different Dr tomorrow too. But I just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience or knows what they could be?

If you have a dentist, try getting them to take a look too. It does sound like thrush and it can have various appearances. If there is also some rubbing on palate this can cause white or red patches, and the thrush fungi might thrive there. If they were apthous ulcers your LO would be in a lot of pain and it would be unusual for them to persist so long in the same place.

as an aside, have you tried different flow speeds for the bottle teats? My DS used to scream and not feed if the flow was too fast or slow for his liking.
