Baby Eye test

Hi mums,
My 6 month old baby had a dilation test on his eyes today due to his left eye drifting out.

They checked and seen one of his optic nerves is slightly smaller than the other so they said they want an MRI to see his eyes and brain to see if it's anything underlying etc

I just wanted to know if anyone else's baby had this and the outcome of this?

I'm so worried

Tia

Hi OP.
Optic nerve hypoplasia (small discs) usually occur because not all of the optic nerve cells have developed properly for that eye and it usually means that the vision in that eye won't be quite as good as the other eye.

Sometimes, it also means that there are also less nerve cells in other parts of the brain, which is why they want to do an MRI.

What's really good though is that the other eye looks normal, so he should have good vision out of that eye.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you, I will.
Do you know if the vision in that eye will improve with glasses.
They said the optic nerve is only the tiniest bit smaller than the other so it's not a massive difference in size but they just want to get the mri done to rule anything out!

It might do if they have significant prescription in that eye?
Even if not, there are a lot of people who have slightly worse vision in one eye compared to the other who don’t notice!
