21 days D&V

My 3yo has had what is believed to be two D&V bugs very close together over last three weeks.

There has been a few days where he was ok and went back to nursery and presumably caught the second bug.

He has periods of feeling ok and feeling very hungry. Playing and being his normal bonkers self. And then the vomiting and diarrhoea returns.

We've had 5 appointments with GP over past 3 weeks and one visit to ED.

The general thing from doctors seems to be "he's not dehydrated enough to have a cannula and IV fluids in hospital so just keep going at home"

I'm losing my mind . My son is still vomiting. It's day 21

Has the gp not asked for a sample of poop?

Nogodsnomasters · 02/02/2025 10:29

Has anyone else in the house caught either of these bugs?

clinellwipe · 02/02/2025 10:30

Nope. And neither have my parents who have been with us at times over the three weeks...

Ahh @clinellwipe I didn't realise it was you!! Don't know if you remember me from my thread of norovirus a fortnight ago.

Honestly if no one else is catching these bugs, it makes me wonder if it IS bugs causing it. Have you checked with nursery/school setting to see if other children have been off with stomach bugs?

evrey · 02/02/2025 14:41

Sometimes after a stomach bug it can take children a week to rebuild the stomach lining ,which you need to breakdown the food properly. if he has had 2 bugs then it will be even worse.
However still vomiting after 21 days! something isnt right there. I would insist on a stool sample being taken to see if this is in fact a stomach bug .

Hi @Nogodsnomasters ! Thanks for remembering me :)

After 3 weeks of GPs and ED visits he was admitted to paediatric ward for blood tests, fluids and they want to formally exclude IBD and coeliac.

We've been discharged now with two week open access to go back to the ward- fantastic.

Huge weight off my shoulders - both my husband and I are doctors (no paediatric experience!) and we've been flying a bit blind the last 3 weeks throughout this. The responsibility of being in charge of the situation honestly made me unwell, but to have had actual paediatric consultants take control of the situation has been the biggest relief. Now I can just be mum instead of clueless but worried medical person xx

How on earth did you decide to become a doctor with emetophobia!? You brave lady! I am so glad someone finally took your boys symptoms seriously, it was about time. Have the fluids made him feel a bit better? My ds10 was diagnosed with coeliacs last sept - it's not a fun time. So if it turns out to be that I have plenty of chat lol

So glad you feel relieved that this is now being investigated properly hug

clinellwipe · 05/02/2025 18:05

Doctors are relatively hands off compared to other ward staff ... I definitely wouldn't have been able to be a nurse or HCA with emetophobia 🫣 Also I'm extremely good at washing my hands and donning all the PPE, my husband on the other hand will pull down his mask to chew on his nails on the ward 😳

Do you mind sharing what your son's symptoms were @Nogodsnomasters ? My son seems to live off toast and pasta etc so curious to know if this is the root of years of constipation, tiredness etc

Your husband's antics would give me panic attacks lol. I could never work with sick people at all so I still think it's brave!

Of course, so when younger he had on/off constipation and reflux but it didn't cause too much hassle, always pale, dark circles under eyes. Then last year the symptoms ramped up out of the blue starting with lack of appetite and nausea then progressed to dry heaving, occasional vomiting, constipation, fatigue, dizziness, stomach pain, headaches, worsening reflux. Eventually he ended up dehydrated and admitted to children's hospital where he had his first blood test, that showed his liver was inflamed and his iron was low (both symptoms of coeliacs). We then realized he hadn't gained any weight in a year 🙈 first coeliacs screening came back positive but only mildly and the genetic test was negative, so they wanted to wait a few months and continue on gluten, he then had the test repeated this time the figure was much higher and the genetic test came back positive 🙄 so he was given the diagnosis then, they did offer us an endoscopy for biopsies too but we declined (ds has autism and very anxious). He now sees the consultant every 4-6 weeks, plus dietician.

@clinellwipe do you have an update please? In a similar position with my three year old.
