Scar on toddler’s face

Hi. My precious 19 months old daughter fell in the store while playing with her big brother and unfortunately hit a sharp corner of a shelf. She got laceration on her cheek and 3 dissolvable stitches. Long story short, one of the stitches dissolved ok, another one left deep dots and the third one stayed the longest time (I was constantly in a contact with the pediatrician but she was saying just to moisturize and wait) and it left like a scratch when it came off. It’s been about 1.5 months ago. I even talked to a plastic surgeon but it’s to early, we just need to wait. I use silicon sheets for about 18 hours per day. Please tell me I’m not alone in this and not only a laceration scar but also sutures mark will go away! I keep looking for similar scars and how they heal online but everything looks different. I wish I asked for normal stitches, I just didn’t know 😭 please help!

Are you able to post a photo of the scar?

Elaine06 · 26/01/2025 16:55

Thank you for your response. I’d be glad to send it to you to have a look if you have any experience with this!

I’m not sure what you are asking and I think that you are considering a plastics operation to minimise a scar which only required 3 stitches, is that right?

What will you do if/when she gets a simple childhood illness like chicken pox and has several scars all over her body?

Do you not just accept that kids have accidents and scrapes and that you can’t get this OTT over every single mark? It’s not life threatening, it’s part of childhood, surely?

You are already using silicone sheets, but I was going to suggest the silicone gel instead. You apply a tiny amount, but would be easier to apply/keep on than the sheets.

My son had a nasty deep cut on his face beside his eye age 2, he tripped at nursery. It wasn’t stitched, but it was a very nasty cut. It left a red scar which only really became invisible when he was 5 years old. For a while, it would still show when he got red in the face after exercise or caught a suntan, but it has eventually faded.

If you’ve been advised to wait and see, I would do that.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 26/01/2025 17:14

OP it's scary but you're over reacting because of how awful it is for your child to go through this. Here is my stepdaughter aged 4 when she tripped at her mums and landed head first on the outside corner of the house. 5 stitches. This is her at 13. You'd literally never know. It will look bad for a while but in life it won't bother her.

(Sorry for up close photos trying to protect her privacy)

I had consultation with plastic surgeon because my pediatrician mentioned a possibility of a dimple on that spot so I went ahead for any useful advice like a proper massage or anything like that. Well there is nothing apparently. No I don’t consider a plastic surgery in her childhood but I surely will support her if she wants one it in future. Hopefully she will see it as a part of her face and it will be just a normal thing for her and will not cause any insecurity in future 🙏 I feel guilty that I messed up and possibly cause those insecurities for her in future in her teenage years or so.

Thanks for reaching out! Do you think it would be better to use silicon sheet overnight and gel during the day?

I'm very just recently been in the same situation and had advice from a friend who works in a scar clinic. Apparently this is the best thing to use:

https://www.boots.com/kelo-cote-scar-gel-treatment-6g-10259814?cmmmc=bmm-buk-google-ppccPLAsAs-----pmaxhealthgggshoppingpharmacyypmedia&gaddsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAA-AdmwRM3nXXzvVThGXyz713xryzl&gclid=Cj0KCQiA19e8BhCVARIsALpFMgG8nveNXUS9xusqJpLxHjbPmJ8YRqXe4LDHf7RoQjJyIraRZMqo7wYaAswXEALwwcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

JC03745 · 26/01/2025 22:30

@christmascracker123 Yes, silicone gel is the exact same thing I recommended too. Other brands are available, but all very similar if not the exact, same ingredients.

I have had stitches in a few places on my face from a very bad accident and those marks on your daughter should go over time and her scar will also fade.

I used a very high potency vit E oil and it was so beneficial to marks left on my face.

Also,I know it's hard but I would try extremely hard not to worry about it,I'm not trivialising it but there are much worse things than scars, so keep things in perspective Smile

Needanadultgapyear · 26/01/2025 22:47

My daughter had a very large deep cut to her forehead as a 6 year that was very tricky to closed and for a while had a very visible scar about 6cms long. But as she got older it shrank and faded and is now only visible if you know where it is and go looking for it.
Your daughters will contract and fade as time goes on.

Chloramphenicol eye ointment not drops
it’s a little known remedy for scarring but a lot of drs recommend this

Mimi810 · 31/05/2025 23:11

Hi,
please my daughter is in the same situation. How did it healed to your daughter? Thank you for sharing. It is very traumatic for us too.

I'm sorry it happened to your kid! Well my daughter is still healing, it’s been 8 months. Of course now it looks much better and the scar looks more subtle from some angles and more indented and pink from others, also it depends on the blood flow - if it’s hot, it’s brighter. You just need to be patient. It does get better over time. For peace of mind we went to the plastic surgeon but she said nothing special needs to be done, just wait. But it will take 1-2 years to see an actual improvement, not months.
